by Mack Attack ยป "Amen on the no injuries. What I saw was De leon's sophmore QB can flat throw a football and their sophomore running back is very very shifty, quick, and flat out good. Deleons defense have up a play or 2 on quick passes to the outsides but that can be cleaned up. Run defense was amazing. Don't think they allowed a running first down with the ones all night. They also flat out hit hard every play. I loved it. Deleon is improved over last year. Lost some weapons but grew the talent they already had."Comment

FROM "OskeeWowWow"
"Reading today that Meridian was a playoff team last year bringing back 13 or 15 starters (depending on if you trust Dave Campbell or the FNF mag). That is very encouraging.
Offense has very nice potential if Bearcats can clean up the penalties/drops. OL looked solid and that soph RB got after it - he was the surprise of the night for me. QB was the QB everyone expected (stud). WRs will need to grow up with some experience - don't think we saw their best game (just a scrimmage, you wouldn't expect it yet).
Defensively it's hard to know if Meridian's O just has some issues up front or if the Bearcat front 7 is gonna be really good but they were pretty dominant in the run game. Secondary has some work ahead but it's not for lack of physical talent.
All of the issues I saw seemed correctable, or items that will improve with experience - no real physical holes this year like there has been in the recent past. Future's extremely bright at DeLeon for the next 3 years (at least)."

Clifton 2-1 Hico
Live Qtr. Clifton 1
"Hico defense would have several great play, but then give up a long TD. All 3 Clifton touchdowns came from 50+ yards out.
Hico offense could move he ball, but turnovers kept them out of the endzone.
Clifton is predicted to win their district in 3A Div 2. Both teams have a long way to go. Hico had a player with a likely collarbone injury, and Clifton had a player ( lineman ) hobbled off the field, but look like he could put some weigh on his foot."

2016 Region Outlooks: 2A DI Region II โ Crawford, Mart, Goldthwaite lead crowded region
WITH REALIGNMENT BEHIND US, MIKE CRAVEN TAKES A LOOK AT HOW EACH REGION SHOULD SHAKE OUT WHEN FALL ROLLS AROUND.
by Mike Craven
"The UIL realigned the districts for the 2016 and 2017 football seasons in February. Realignment doesnโt just change district races โ championships can be decided with new groupings competing once the playoffs begin. Weโll take a closer look at the frontrunners in each region throughout the spring doldrums.
Class 2A Division I Region II
Region II stood relatively pat during district realignment.
District 5 received the biggest facelift, yet still remains behind the field along with District 6.
Tolar, a team that reached the regional final after a third place finish in District 7, is the biggest absence from the previous alignment. The regional championship is likely claimed by a program hailing from District 7 or District 8 again in 2016.
In 2015, the final four teams left in Region II were from those districts.
Third place teams from those districts โ Bosqueville and Tolar โ knocked off district champions from District 5 and 6, respectfully, in the area round of the state playoffs.
Crawford, District 8โs champion, ultimately won Region II with a 35-0 victory over Tolar from District 7. Canadian ended Crawfordโs season in the state semifinals.
Crawford
The returning regional champion earned the right to be the favorite in 2016. The Piratesโ lone loss in 2015 was against eventual state champion Canadian. It was a route, but the two-time defending state champions are now in Class 3A. That moves leaves Region I open, but it also eases the path for whichever team emerges into the state semifinals from Region II. Delbert Kelmโs squad won 14 games before losing to Canadian, dispatching of Tolar in non-district play to start the season and to claim the Region II crown. Crawfordโs defense allowed 106 points through 14 contests before giving up 61 to Canadian. Crawfordโs offense averaged 37 points per game.
Goldthwaite
Gary Proffittโs program is no stranger to success. The 2015 season was no different as the Eagles went 10-3, claimed another district championship and advanced to the third round of the state playoffs. Crawford, the eventual Region II champ, ended Goldthwaiteโs season in a 36-12 victory. Goldthwaite beat Axtell and Alvord in the first two rounds of the playoffs. The loss to Crawford was the first defeat for the Eagles since non-district games against Mart to begin the season and Mason in Week 4. Tolarโs move to Class 3A leaves Hico as the biggest obstacle for the power-running attack of the Eagles.
Mart
The Panthers were arguably the third best team in Region II in 2015 despite falling to Tolar in the opening round of the state playoffs. The program finished second behind Crawford in District 8 and fell six points short of moving on. It was still a successful season for Mart, losing only to Bremond, Crawford and Tolar. The district battle between Mart and Crawford should be one of the best in Class 2A."

De Leon Bearcats seek a return to form
By Mike Lee, Special to the Reporter-News
"Fifth-year De Leon coach David Yeager isn't ready to declare the Bearcats completely back to their 2013 level, which included nine wins and a third-round playoff appearance.
But Yeager does think his Bearcats, who return 16 starters from last year's 3-8 team, are in the process of coming back.
"We're probably still a year away," said Yeager, who has only five seniors this season. "We're still a little young, and we don't have the linemen we had in 2013. But, hopefully, we will be able to compete better this year."
De Leon won just six games in 2014 and 2015 combined while experiencing expected rebuilding seasons. Last year the Bearcats started 1-6, but qualified for the playoffs as a fourth-place team by beating San Saba (27-6) and Hamilton (24-20) in district.
The District 7-2A Division I favorites are Crawford, Goldthwaite and Hico. Crawford was a state semifinalist last year, as was Hico in 2013. Goldthwaite won two playoff games last year. De Leon is again predicted to vie for the fourth and final playoff spot.
Kevin Yeager, the coach's son, started at quarterback last year as a freshman and passed for 2,403 yards and 20 touchdowns. The 6-foot-2 signal caller helped the Bearcats make the transition from a tight-formation running team to a spread team.
Orson Sylva, a third-year varsity starter but still only a junior, combined for 750 yards rushing and receiving last year. Cooper Dyson, a 6-4 senior receiver, gives Kevin Yeager a tall passing target.
"When we were a running team, we had 11 defenders in the box breathing down our neck on every play," Coach Yeager said. "Now, we are able to spread out the defense and get the ball to our athletes in space. But we are still able to run the ball in the spread."
The offensive line includes sophomore center Eric Sides (5-10, 185), senior guards Willie Garza (5-10, 190) and Ray Amaya (5-9, 190), senior tackle Aaron Riggs (6-0, 200) and junior tackle Blake Bellomy (6-0, 220).
Safeties Kevin Yeager and Sylva lead the defensive returnees. Yeager made 90 tackles last year while Sylva logged 89 stops and has intercepted 11 passes over the last two seasons. Garza added 70 tackles last year from his linebacker spot."
