Big Country Notebook: ON THE SUBJECT OF BOUNCE-BACK TEAMS
By Evan Ren of the Abilene Reporter News

"The De Leon Bearcats are rapidly becoming one of the area's most interesting stories in 2016.

After posting consecutive records of 3-7 and 3-8, De Leon is 4-0, backed by a salty defense that has allowed a total of just 12 points thus far with two shutouts.

By all accounts, Bearcat sophomore quarterback Kevin Yeager, the son of coach David Yeager, is the real deal, meaning we could be seeing a three-year upswing for the program.

De Leon squares off with Crawford (3-1) in its District 7-2A Division I opener on Friday in one of this week's top area games — the first true measuring stick the Bearcats have had thus far.

"We're very excited and hope to play well against a very good Crawford team," David Yeager said. "But obviously, it's just one game and it won't make our season if we win it or break our season if we lose it. But it's a big district game and we hope to have all our weapons on the field, hitting on all cylinders."

QB Yeager’s return should bolster De Leon in tough game against Hico
                        Evan Ren Columnist

"In its 11-year history, the Big Country Game of the Week has never featured the De Leon Bearcats.

That all changes on Friday, when De Leon (4-1) squares off with Hico (3-1) in our spotlight game.

The Bearcats were on our Game of the Week radar a week ago in a matchup with Crawford. But with standout quarterback Kevin Yeager nursing a lower leg injury, the game fell out of the top spot.

It was the correct decision, with De Leon, unable to move the chains, fell 45-7.

This week, however, Yeager is expected to return to the lineup. When he's healthy, that makes the Bearcats a completely different team, as demonstrated by their wins over Baird (42-0), Winters (49-6) and Cross Plains (47-6) to open the season.

Hico, in the meantime, has reeled off consecutive wins over Millsap (41-8) and Italy (48-7), since falling to an excellent Tolar team (47-13) on Sept. 2.

Picking a winner here is difficult. The computers love Hico by two scores. But the weakness of power ratings is that they cannot see who's in the lineup from week to week.

De Leon is unbeaten this year with Yeager on the field, and he's expected to play.

                        I'll go with the upset.

                        PICK: De Leon by 1."

Hico rallies for district win over De Leon, 34-32
By Evan Ren of the Abilene Reporter News

HICO—"In the end it came down to a handful of key plays for Hico to escape Tiger Stadium with a thrilling 34-32 win over De Leon in Friday's Big Country Game of the Week.

With both clubs making their debut in Reporter-News' spotlight game, a combination of the Hico ground game and a few De Leon miscues helped the Tigers rally from 14-0 and 20-6 deficits en route to the win.

Jacob Smith rushed for 119 yards and one score to pace Hico (4-1, 1-0 District 7-2A DI), which pounded out 253 rushing yards as a team.

De Leon (4-2, 0-2) got 286 yards and three touchdowns through the air from sophomore quarterback Kevin Yeager, despite his returning from a lower leg injury. He also added a 10-yard touchdown run.

"I'm just proud of our kids," De Leon coach David Yeager said. "I thought they played hard.

"Hats off to Hico. They did a great job and have an excellent football team. But our kids fought hard. There were probably 150 plays tonight. We made a lot of plays, they made a lot of plays. We made a few mistakes tonight, but I'm not going to pick on a mistake. We did a lot of good things tonight and I'm proud of them."

Two key stretches proved to be the difference in the game — the first coming in a second quarter that saw Hico rally from two scores down with two consecutive touchdowns.

The second coming in the fourth quarter with Hico leading 28-26 when Jacob Crouch read a De Leon screen pass, picked it off and returned it 5 yards for 34-26 lead.

De Leon wasn't finished, however, cutting the gap to 34-32 when Kevin Yeager scrambled into the end zone from 10 yards out with 2:39 to play. The ensuing two-point conversion try fell incomplete, however, forcing the Bearcats to try a pooch kick which was recovered by Hico's Hunter Mullins.

Four plays and two first downs later, the Tigers were in the victory formation.

"With Kevin back there, De Leon is a completely different team," Hico coach Keith Wood said. "You can tell he's a coach's son and he was just tearing us apart at first. … Finally when we got the game close, we felt like were in a good situation.

"But you've got to give De Leon credit. They started stopping us in the second half, so it took an overall team effort."

De Leon got out of the gate early with a pair of quick scores in as many possessions to start the game.

Chris Cox found the end zone first on an 18-yard touchdown run down the right sideline on the Bearcats' third play from scrimmage.

Following a Hico punt, the Bearcats struck again with the first of two first-quarter touchdown passes by Yeager — a 37-yarder to Daniel Sanchez for a 14-0 lead at the 5:38 mark.

From that point forward, however, the Hico offense began to find its rhythm. And on the ensuing possession with 3:01 left in the first, the Tigers got on the board with a 25-yard pass from Briley Johnson to Crouch to cut the gap to 14-6.

De Leon briefly recaptured the momentum with a 47-yard scoring strike from Yeager to Orson Sylva with 1:26 left in the first.

But the second quarter belonged to Hico, which took a 21-20 lead into the break with consecutive touchdowns. Cooper Conlee provided the first on a 15-yard scoring run with 9:27 left in the half, bolstered by a two-point conversion run from Smith.

Smith added a touchdown of his own two possessions later on a 5-yard run with 2:36 left in the half to send the Tigers into the break with the lead.

"We started off well, which we like to do, but Hico's a good football team," coach Yeager said. "They came out and made some adjustments and started doing what they do well.

"They started running the football right at us."

Hico expanded its lead to 28-20 when Mullins bolted 60 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. But when Kevin Yeager found Cooper Dyson with a 33-yard scoring pass at the 9:04 mark of the fourth, a photo finish was in the works.

"We settled in and played pretty good defense," coach Yeager said. "We just can't make as many mistakes as we did against a good Hico football team as we did tonight. But you look up there and it's a two-point game, so I'm very proud of the way our kids fought.

Heated high school rivalries nothing new
                                        TWO RIVALRIES IN ONE

"De Leon is unique in that the Bearcats had two rivalries for a long time — with Dublin, 12 miles to the east, and Comanche, 16 miles to the north.

The most hyped game between De Leon and Dublin came in 1960, when both were 9-0. Dublin prevailed 22-8. Its coach? Jimmie Keeling, now the coach at Hardin-Simmons. That was the start of his great coaching career.

“I was in my first head coaching job and we had a bunch of good kids,” Keeling said. “I still hear from some of them from time to time.“

“We were 9-1 and stayed home because then only one team made it to the playoffs,’’ Grady West said. “At that time, Comanche was strong every year, so we had our hands full with them as well.”

The most unique game between Dublin and De Leon happened in 1973, and it’s still called “The Fifth Quarter Game.”

“The score was 0-0 and Dublin had the ball on about our 25-yard line with no time outs when the clock stopped,” coach Grady West recalled. “We look down and the officials had called timeout. That allowed Dublin to get a chance to kick a field goal.

“In our game film you could see one of the officials running down to see if the kick is good or bad, and he ruled the kick was good. The next morning the Reporter-News ran this score on the front page, ‘Dublin 0 0 0 0 3 — 3, De Leon 0 0 0 0 0 — 0.”

According to the De Leon fans, the kick was high, it was straight and long — but not long enough, and it landed in front of the goal post.

Bearcats fans were pounding on the door where the officials dressed. Superintendent James Perkins, a little man who could handle most situations, told the angry mob to leave or they would get the school in trouble with the UIL.

After they had left, the late Perkins went into the dressing room and gave the officials a big piece of his mind.

“In a sense we came out ahead, because we got a new scoreboard out of it,” West said.

West saw the rivalries both as a player and as a coach. The rivalry with Comanche became stronger when his brother Fred, also a former Bearcats player, was the head coach at Comanche and Grady was the head coach at De Leon.

“It think the rivalry was more between us than our teams, although the games were physical and close,” Grady said.

Now, it was different when the two brothers were in high school. One year, Comanche students painted De Leon stores and the high school, and salted the football field. Not to be outdone, some of the Bearcats painted the press box at the Comanche football stadium. Someone also threw watermelons on the field another year.

“We knew the kids at both schools and they were friendly rivals,” West said. “I don’t remember anything happening on the field.”
