DE LEON (7-2) AT GOLDTHWAITE (7-2)

"This won’t decide the District 7-2A championship, but the winner is almost certain to earn the No. 2 seed in league play (barring a Hico upset of Crawford).

It will also offer one of this week’s best Friday night football atmospheres, with a large, enthusiastic crowd and two teams that have already locked up playoff spots.

I’ll go with Goldthwaite, which has shown the ability to win big matchups this season, topping both Mason and Hico. But with De Leon entering this game with its health on an upswing, one can safely assume the Bearcats will pose a serious problem.

Sophomore De Leon quarterback Kevin Yeager is a star in the making and will keep the Bearcats in it. Both defenses are limiting the opposition to just 14 points per game so a shootout won’t be in the cards.

This will be a trench war."

                                        PICK: Goldthwaite by 7

De Leon quarterback Kevin Yeager leads Bearcat evolution
                                          Evan Ren , Abilene Reporter-News
De Leon has switched from the ground-based slot-T offense to a spread look, led by talented sophomore quarterback Kevin Yeager.

"Throughout much of his career, fifth-year De Leon football coach David Yeager had taken the old-fashioned approach to the game — opting for a conservative slot-T offense to methodically move the chains.

It worked — illustrated by a 129-80 overall mark in a career spanning more than two decades.

An influx of new personnel, however, has brought about a late change in philosophy.

Where the Bearcats once were content to pound out 4 yards per play, they are now spreading the field more and throwing the ball roughly 15-20 times per game.

At the heart of the change: Yeager’s son, Kevin — a gifted sophomore who not only is impressing onlookers with his arm strength, but with his decision-making as well.

“I’ve been a slot-T guy for most of my career,” David Yeager said. “When I got here, we developed the slot-T mentality — ground and pound.

“It worked well in 2012 and 2013 because we had some big, physical-types of kids with lots of running backs. But looking down the road, we really didn’t have those types of players coming.”

Trying to adjust to changing personnel types, the Bearcats dabbled briefly with the spread in 2014 but returned to the slot-T due to a lack of success in a 3-7 season. They finally made the switch full-time last year when Kevin Yeager arrived for his freshman season along with new offensive coordinator Reggie Patrick.

The result: More than 2,400 passing yards and 20 touchdowns from the coach’s son as a ninth-grader in a 3-8 campaign.

The Bearcats may have had a losing record. But they qualified for the playoffs, and the potential for bigger things was obvious.

“When I first got here, the slot-T was the mentality and they didn’t have much in the receiving game,” Patrick said. “It took the kids until about halfway through the season last year for them to really buy in to what we were doing.

“But once they did, they started seeing how successful we could be. They started enjoying it because we were up-tempo so it made that transition a lot easier.”

A year later, De Leon is 7-2, averaging 36 points and 376 yards per game, of which 209 yards are coming via the passing game.

The switch in philosophy wasn’t easy for David Yeager, who has voluntarily handed over the reins of the new attack to Patrick.

“It’s kind of funny because I’m a conservative play-caller,” Coach Yeager said. “As a head coach for around 20 years, most of the time I was calling the plays out of a slot-T for 3 for 4 yards in a cloud of dust, and that was just our mentality. It was an adjustment for me last year to step back and let coach Patrick call the plays.

“Now I just focus on the offensive line and try to get out of the way of Kevin and Coach Patrick. It was an adjustment, I’ll admit that. But it has been fun — especially when it’s working. It has been a lot of fun.”

                                          Kevin would concur.

The sophomore has hit 94 of 148 throws this year for 24 touchdowns, operating primarily out spread formations.

The Bearcats opened at 4-0 with wins over Baird (42-0), Winters (49-6), Cross Plains (47-6) and Santo (9-0). They are currently on a three-game district winning streak heading into Friday’s game at Goldthwaite having scored a combined 134 points in victories over Hamilton, Valley Mills and San Saba.

“I’ve always liked the spread because I like throwing the ball,” Kevin said. “That’s what you see every Saturday in college football.

“So being able to run the spread and be a real part of this offense has been fun and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Opposing defenses aren’t finding it so enjoyable.

Blessed with uncommon arm strength and an eye for reading defenses (honed by his father), Kevin has shown the ability not only to throw the ball downfield, but to throw it over the middle through traffic with accuracy.

This is a rare trait among small-school quarterbacks — even more rare among those who were raised in the slot-T.

“(Kevin) grew up with a ball in his hand — whether it was a football, basketball or baseball,” Coach Yeager said. “He’s got a good arm, so even though he grew up around the slot-T, he grew up throwing a ball round in the backyard. So it didn’t surprise me that he could do these things.”

As one may expect, the interest is building in De Leon, which is 27-26 under Yeager.

The Bearcats’ best season under their current coach came in 2013 with a 9-4 record and a trip to the regional semifinals while utilizing the slot-T. But with just six seniors on the current roster and Kevin Yeager having two years of eligibility left, the general consensus is that De Leon is on an extended upswing, despite the radical style change.

“It’s been fun,” David Yeager said. “When you’re winning, even baloney tastes better.”

The Eagles are 4-1 and second to Crawford in District 7-2A but a De Leon win lifts the Bearcats into a tie and the runner-up slot."
