Last-second field goal lifts De Leon over Goldthwaite
Brad Keith
GOLDTHWAITE-"Daniel Sanchez scored 32 points, none more important than the final three on a 33-yard field goal as time expired to lift De Leon to a 38-35 win in an instant classic at Goldthwaite Friday night.
But the field goal was one of the more simple plays of the night for Sanchez, who hauled in six catches for 224 yards and three touchdowns and made the play of the night with a 66-yard interception return right down the De Leon sideline for a touchdown on the final play of the first half.
That brought the Bearcats within six at the intermission after trailing 20-0 midway through the second quarter. Then De Leon had to erase a two-touchdown second half deficit after Quaid Seward scored from five yards out one play after a blocked punt for a 28-14 Goldthwaite lead early in the third.
De Leon - especially Sanchez and quarterback Kevin Yeager - kept coming.
Sanchez, who was also a perfect 5-for-5 kicking PATs, hauled in touchdown catches covering 71, 35 and 53 yards, all from Yeager, who was 13-28 passing for 319 yards. The longest of those touchdowns got De Leon on the board after Goldthwaite looked as if it may run away with it. The tandem also tied the game at 28 and again at 35, with De Leon finally taking its only lead with zeroes on the clock at Eagle Field.
The victory means De Leon steals the second seed in 7-2A-Division I and will face Riesel in the opening round of the Region II-2A playoffs next week. Goldthwaite slips to third in the district and will face 8-2A runner-up Bosqueville.
“I’m just so happy and proud for our boys. Beating Goldthwaite at their place is hard to do,” said De Leon head coach David Yeager. “Daniel made the big plays and Kevin did a great job getting him the ball, but it’s all our kids working together. This is just a huge win for our program.”
Goldthwaite was powered all night by Quaid Seward, who rushed 35 times for 249 yards and four touchdowns, including a 19-yard burst to give the Eagles a 35-28 lead with 5:04 remaining.
De Leon answered with the last scoring strike from Yeager to Sanchez just 58 seconds later, and the last PAT by Sanchez tied the game again.
Goldthwaite drove inside the De Leon 30 before losing a fumble that was recovered by Ray Amaya of De Leon, and the Yeager and the offense came back out to begin a game-winning 58-yard drive that reached the Goldthwaite 15 before the Bearcats used their final timeout with 4.3 seconds remaining. Goldthwaite then called timeout to try and ice Sanchez, but there was no icing the star of the night.
From the right hash, Sanchez calmly knocked the 33-yard field goal straight through the uprights and De Leon players and fans alike charged onto the field in celebration.
“It was all in my head, just all in my head,” said Sanchez of the game winning kick. “I make those all the time in practice and I knew I had to make it then with the game on the line.”
But kicking was the easiest part of the big night by Sanchez.
“Our line played great and my QB throws me great passes. I was just trying to make plays,” Sanchez said. “He knows how I run my routes, the moves I make, and just how to get me the ball.”
Yeager converted one first down with his feet and two others on passes of 19 yards to Orson Sylva and 20 yards to Sanchez. It was Sylva who earlier hauled in a 51-yard bomb from Yeager to tie the score at 28-28 early in the fourth."

BC Player of the Week: De Leon's Sanchez nabs honor
Evan Ren
By most accounts, it was a game of the ages.
So it’s only fitting that our Big Country Player of the Week was a key participant in it.
De Leon senior Daniel Sanchez takes our weekly accolade after booting a game-winning 33-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Bearcats to a 38-35 win Friday at Goldthwaite.
It was the perfect cap on the evening for Sanchez, who scored 32 of his team’s points that night, including a 5-of-5 effort on PATs.
Aside from the damage he did with his foot, Sanchez caught six passes for 224 yards, with scoring receptions of 71, 35 and 53 yards.
For good measure, he picked off a pass just before halftime, returning it 66 yards for yet another score.
Put simply, it was one of the greatest all-around performances by a Big Country Player this season — made even more special by the fact that it helped lock up a No. 2 playoff seed for the Bearcats (8-2), who will face Riesel (6-4) in the Class 2A Division I bi-district round at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Alvarado.
“It was a classic,” De Leon coach David Yeager said of the win over Goldthwaite. “And Daniel played a great football game — offense, defense and special teams.
“It was a complete game. He’s a special young man and he’s done a great job for us all year.”

All games are big as H.S. football playoffs begin
Evan Ren , Abilene Reporter-News
"Now things get fun.
With an interesting 2016 regular season in the books, the Big Country Game of the Week has concluded.
As I say every year: from this point forward, they’re all the Game of the Week.
We now move into postseason play, with a host of area teams attempting to negotiate the minefield between the Big Country and Arlington.
Can anyone get there?
We shall see.
DE LEON (8-2) VS. RIESEL (6-4)
When healthy, this De Leon club is flat-out dangerous, as we saw in last week’s 38-35 road win over a very good Goldthwaite team.
The Bearcats have won four straight, they’re averaging 36 points per night, and they have one of the Big Country’s top young quarterbacks in Kevin Yeager.
Riesel has quality wins over Granger (47-31), Corsicana Mildred (29-28) and Italy (27-13). But a defense allowing 28 points per game makes it difficult to give them the nod here."
PICK: De Leon by 7

BC Game of the Week:22 area teams still in playoffs.
Evan Ren
Last Week: 29-6, .828
Season total: 396-103, .794
With Round 2 of the 2016 Texas high school football playoffs upon us, there are no fewer than 22 Big Country teams, along with locals from Abilene High, Cooper and Wylie still alive.
If my projections are right (which they usually aren’t) we could lose fewer than half of them heading into next week’s regional semifinals.
We shall see.
