Really nice field. Quite a few playoff games have been here, and our home section has a middle section with red chairs. The rest are like regular bleachers, on cement

Big Country Notebook: Road ahead tough for area football teams
      Evan Ren , Abilene Reporter-News

"We’re two rounds away from the state championship games, and four Big Country teams and one local (Wylie) still have an opportunity to get to Jerry World.

Typically, at least one or two Big Country teams survive the minefield — sometimes more. But I’ve got to tell you, I’m not overflowing with confidence that I’ll be making the annual trek to Arlington just yet.

Yes, four teams that I’m responsible four — Sweetwater, Anson, De Leon and Munday — have avoided elimination. But there are some nasty hurdles for them to clear before I can book a hotel room.

Here’s a quick look at what’s ahead for the area:"

      CLASS 2A DIVISION I
Survivors: Anson (10-3), De Leon (11-2)

"Both Anson and De Leon are blessed with quality quarterbacks, tons of momentum and confidence.

Unfortunately for the Big Country, they’re also both on the same side of the state bracketing as powerhouse Crawford (12-1), which De Leon will face first in the Region II final.

Anson will get Abernathy (11-2) in a Region I championship many will expect the Tigers to win. However, few expected the Abernathy to knock off a very good team from Post last week (24-21) so nothing is assured here.

Wins by both De Leon and Anson this week would lock up a state berth for the Big Country, since the two schools would then meet in the state semifinal. But Crawford remains the joker in the deck that could shut down the highway to Arlington for everyone.

I will say this: Ignore the 45-7 loss De Leon suffered at the hands of Crawford on Sept. 23. The Bearcats were missing their top two quarterbacks that night and lacked the tools to win that matchup the first time around."

Big Country Player of the Week: BIG COUNTRY TOP 10
        Evan Ren, Abilene Reporter-News

        4. Kevin Yeager, QB/DB, So., De Leon—"Is there anything this kid can’t do?

Last week, he hit 10 of 15 passes for 151 yards and three touchdowns in a 30-14 regional semifinal win over Windthorst.

        But that’s just the beginning.

He also rushed 22 times for 101 yards, had seven tackles, including one for loss, and picked off two passes."

JACKSBORO—"Sophomore Kevin Yeager passed for three touchdowns, rushed for 95 yards and intercepted two passes as part of an impressive De Leon defensive performance to knock off Windthorst, 30-14, in a Region II-2A Division I semifinal Friday afternoon.

For the first time since 1990, De Leon is on to the state quarterfinals.

“This is a great accomplishment for our team. W’re just getting better and better every week,” said De Leon head coach David Yeager. “We were young when the season started, but when you count scrimmages we’ve played 14, 15 weeks now and we’ve come a long way. We just keep winning gold balls and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Kevin Yeager was 11-17 passing for 159 yards, hitting Daniel Sanchez for two touchdowns and Calvin Martin for another. Sanchez also hit three field goals and three PATs, scoring 18 points for the Bearcats, who last played in the regional semifinals in 2013.

The Bearcats (11-2) had 283 yards of total offense and yielded just 238 to Windthorst, which had only 63 yards rushing. The Bearcat defense had five sacks, Yeager picked off passes near the end of each half and Bryce Whiteley, a defensive end, batted a ball in the air and intercepted it for another takeaway.

Sanchez capped the opening drive of the game with a 27-yard field goal and the Bearcats had the lead for good. It soon grew, with a three-and-out to begin a monster defensive afternoon followed by a 7-yard Kevin Yeager-to-Calvin Martin swing pass and run for a 10-0 advantage almost nine minutes into the game.

Windthorst responded with Nathan Bales going wide to the left for a 3-yard touchdown that cut it to 10-7 less than two minutes into the second.

De Leon’s biggest drive of the game covered 50 yards and made it 17-7 less than a minute before halftime and was highlighted by the game’s biggest play.

Facing fourth-and-seven from the Windthorst 21, David Yeager turned down a field goal try of about 38 yards, and instead De Leon called for a quick screen to Sanchez. The senior star picked up two blocks at the line of scrimmage, broke a tackle and turned on the jets. From the moment he crossed the goal line, De Leon held at least a two-possession lead the rest of the way.

A defensive stop to begin the second half set up a 37-yard Sanchez field goal, and on the next Bearcat possession Yeager froze the defense with play-action then lobbed a 36-yard touchdown to Orson Sylva for a commanding 27-7 lead halfway through the third.

Windthorst fought within 27-14 with 10:29 remaining, and the teams exchanged possessions before Sanchez finished the scoring with his final field goal from 38 yards out against a stiff north wind with 4:42 left.

“Our kids and everyone from De Leon really came in here believing we were going to win, and that’s how I think you saw us carry ourselves all day,” said Yeager. “Windthorst has a great football team and we have a lot of respect for them, but this was about us. It was about coming here on a mission to survive and play another week and here we are.”

Kevin Yeager had another touchdown pass – a back corner fade to Cooper Dyson – called back for pass interference. He worked the zone-option for the bulk of his rushing yards and then scrambled for others. And when he couldn’t get first downs he unleaded quality punts, including a key 48-yard boot that was downed at the Windthorst 10 with 9:02 remaining.

Aaron Riggs then stopped Windthorst a yard short on 4th-and-two, setting up the final Sanchez field goal and touching off a celebration on the De Leon side.

The Bearcats will face Crawford or Mart in the Region II-2A Division I final next week. Crawford beat De Leon, 45-14, in the opening week of 7-2A Division I district play, but Kevin Yeager did not play because of injury. The Bearcats dropped a 34-32 thriller to Hico a week later, but have since won seven straight including a come-from-behind 38-35 victory over perennial power Goldthwaite to steal second place in district, then playoff wins over Riesel, Valley View and now Windthorst.

“I don’t care who it is, we’ll play anybody anywhere at this point,” said Yeager, whose club has won its three playoff games by an average of 20.7 points. “It’s just great to still be playing at all.”

Crawford prepping for rematch with De Leon
                            KWTX

"It just keeps getting better for the Crawford Pirates.

The district 2A-1 champions won again this past week, knocking off the Mart Panthers, one of the top teams in the state.

Now they're in the quarterfinals where they face off against and 11-2 De Leon, a team they're pretty familiar with.

That's because they've already seen the Bearcats, a district opponent, once this year. And when they did, they beat them 45-7.

But don't read too much into that score, De Leon was without their quarterback, and since the loss have won seven straight. Head coach Delbert Kelm says Crawford will have to bring their "A" game to win this one.

The two teams will meet Friday at 7:30 at Glen Rose High School."

Big Country Game of the Week — Week 15 playoff forecast
                                Evan Ren

"Week 15 has arrived, and I can scarcely believe it.
I say the same thing every year — marveling at the time warp that football puts us into.
At any rate, we’re here, and four Big Country teams along with one local (Wylie) are still shooting for a trip to Arlington.
As always, the picks are getting tougher with each passing week, and my percentages are beginning to reflect it.
Nonetheless, four teams I’m responsible for are still in the hunt, so let’s take look at their chances.

                                REGION I-2A DI FINAL

De Leon (11-2) at Crawford (12-1)

7:30 p.m. Friday at Glen Rose

I completely discount Crawford’s 45-7 win over De Leon on Sept. 23, primarily because DHS was without the services of standout quarterback Kevin Yeager, who doubles as one of the better small-school defensive backs in the area.

That doesn’t mean I view De Leon as the favorite here.

I do, however, believe that the rematch will be far closer. De Leon is a different team with Yeager in the lineup — proven in recent wins at Goldthwaite (38-35) and in last week’s 30-14 whipping of a good Windthorst team in the regional semis.

The only memory Crawford has of De Leon is that of Sept. 23. That works in De Leon’s favor.

Nonetheless, I cannot pull the trigger on an upset pick here.

The combination of Crawford’s powerful running game and a defense allowing only 12 points per game will be too much for the Bearcats to overcome."

                                PICK: Crawford by 14.

Euphoria overtakes De Leon as Bearcats return to state quarterfinals.

DE LEON-"There is a euphoria that has taken over De Leon the last couple weeks and is at a fever pitch as the Bearcat football team gets ready to take on Crawford in the state quarterfinals.

The old timers all remember the feeling well. Deep playoff runs were the norm under legendary retired coach Grady West. There was a state championship in 1975 and a state final appearance in 1990.

Fast forward 26 years, and the Bearcats, with a totally different, modern look, are finally back in the state quarterfinals for the first time since Aaron Saldivar was leading a power option offense.

There’s still plenty of option attack, but it’s the modern zone-read variety out of a modified slot-T offense that looks basically like another spread to the average fan in the bleachers. Such plays were not even in high school play books the last time De Leon ventured this far into the post season.

“There’s definitely a lot of excitement and buzz in the air. You go in a coffee shop or any store or restaurant and everyone’s talking about the Bearcats or asking about the game coming up Friday,” said athletic director and head coach David Yeager. “There is a sense of Americana that just adds a different element to it. It’s what makes football at this time of the year so special, and I hope that these guys soak every bit of it in and are making memories that will last the rest of their lives.”

One could dwell on why it’s been 26 years since De Leon reached the state quarterfinals.

The last time they played in the fourth round of the football playoffs, the peanut industry was still strong and De Leon had 240 or 250 students enrolled in high school, estimates Yeager based on old files he’s found his office. Enrollment now hovers in the 160 range, he says.

There was also the retirement of Grady West, the only head coach the Bearcats had known for three decades. They went through a coaching carousel beginning in 2002, until Yeager, who had five playoff trips in seven years at 3A Llano, arrived before the 2012 season.

“The football program was down to about 25 boys, that’s it. Not even enough to field a JV,” said Yeager. “Now we have right at 50, so we’ve doubled it the last five years.”

It’s the same type of building process Art Briles began at Stephenville in the late 1980s before winning four state championships in the 1990s. It’s the same process that Dublin underwent in recent years with Bob Cervetto, who took over a downtrodden program with low participation and now boasts about 100 in his football program that won bi-district championships in 2014 and 2015, the first time the Lions have achieved that feat in back-to-back seasons.

The turn around at De Leon really took just two years for Yeager and his staff, as the Bearcats won an area title and reached the regional semifinals in 2013. That remained their longest post season journey since 1990 until last weekend.

                                    ||In five seasons at De Leon, David Yeager has guided the Bearcats to the regional semifinals in 2013 and the state quarterfinals this Friday. They meet Crawford at 7:30 p.m. at Tiger Stadium in Glen Rose. ||

Windthorst had just eliminated a Bosqueville team that took Mart to the wire in a district championship game and beat Goldthwaite by 30 in the bi-district round. Many had Windthorst pegged to advance to the quarterfinal, but the Bearcats didn’t just win, they dominated much of the afternoon in Jacksboro last Friday. They jumped out to a 10-0 lead, turned it into 27-7 midway through the third quarter and won, 30-14, behind three touchdown passes and 95 yards rushing by quarterback Kevin Yeager – the head coach’s son – who also intercepted two Windthorst passes, one near the end of each half.

The De Leon bleachers were packed to the brim, as they surely will be again when the Bearcats face off with Crawford for the Region II-2A Division I championship and a spot in the state semifinals. Kickoff at Tiger Stadium in Glen Rose is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday.

“We have outstanding support here in De Leon. It’s one of those great small Texas towns where the whole community gets behind the youth,” David Yeager said. “We’ve drawn great crowds at our playoff games and are just so happy to have so much support for our kids.”

It’s a playoff journey that could easily have never begun. The Bearcats were in the loaded 7-2A Division I that includes the other regional finalist in Crawford as well as perennial powers Goldthwaite and Hico among the seven teams.

District began with Kevin Yeager missing action due to an injury for the second straight week. De Leon managed to beat Santo, 7-0, in a weather-shortened final pre-district bout, but couldn’t stay with Crawford without their leader, falling 45-14.

Yeager returned and was impressive despite a 34-32 loss to HIco the following week, and the Bearcats were suddenly 0-2 in league play.

“It’s really been remarkable, this journey. We started off district 0-2 and were really behind the 8-ball so to speak,” said Coach Yegaer. “But I told the kids after that game in Hico, if you keep getting better every day you won’t lose a game the rest of the year.

“I really meant the rest of the regular season,” David Yeager added with a laugh following a dramatic pause. “But if they want to keep winning the rest of the year, I’ll sure take it.”

De Leon has since won seven straight, and only one was close. The Bearcats erased a 20-0 deficit and Daniel Sanchez hit a 33-yard field goal at the buzzer for a 38-35 win over Goldthwaite in a season finale that lifted them to second place in the district.

That win meant seeing Riesel instead Bosqueville in the opening round of the playoffs, and after a few nervous moments with Riesel running back the opening kickoff, De Leon took control to win, 48-21. They dominated Valley View in the area round, 37-18, before beating Windthorst last week.

“Our kids have just worked so hard. Our mantra is for all our guys leave the field a better player every day, and we have done that,” David Yeager said. “We are a much better football team than when the season started.”

They’re also much better than they were without Kevin Yeager in the September 23 loss to Crawford.

“Having Kevin means we’re able to run our full offense. Orson Sylva came in there and did fine, but then we don’t have him where he’s at his best, so we were losing a little at two positions. It’s just tough to lose your quarterback, especially in the spread,” said Coach Yeager. “Kevin just gives us a better chance. We ask him to do to a lot of things for us, both offensively and defensively, and he does them well and stays poised under pressure.”

Not that having the sophomore quarterback and safety – he is one of the team’s leading tacklers, too – is any kind of magic quick fix to getting past Crawford.

“I’ve only been in this neck of the woods five years, but from what I understand they have been running the same offense and defense for so long they probably have kids running it on the playground at the elementary school,” the coach said. “They have great continuity in their system, their efficient and they don’t beat themselves. That and they have a lot of good football players, so it’s a good combination.”

A combination that has led the Pirates to a spot among the elite small-school programs in Texas. Most recently they reached the quarterfinals in 2013 and 2014 and the semifinals last year. Now they are back in the final eight again.

And De Leon is right there with them, getting a taste of December football and just two wins from playing for a state championship.

“We just came here and went to work, and as a coach you always believe in yourself and your system that you can turn a program around,” David Yegaer said. “But to reach this point is just so big for our coaches and kids and really the whole community of De Leon. This is a blue collar community. People here work hard for their living and they are proud of that, and it rubs off on the kids. We feel like we have some of the best kids in the world right here in De Leon.”

On September 30, following a second straight district loss, those kids found themselves behind the proverbial 8-ball.

Eight weeks later, they’re in the final eight."

De Leon (11-2) vs. Crawford (12-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday at Glen Rose’s Tiger Stadium

"Two teams that weren’t predicted to meet for the second time this year have earned their way to a rematch as De Leon takes on Crawford.
Last week, De Leon rolled past what many thought was a favored Windthorst squad 30-14, but the Bearcats certainly have their hands full against a Crawford squad that won the meeting 45-7 in September.
Crawford is fresh off their upset of a Mart squad that was considered by most to be among the teams to win a state title. The Pirates got a game-winning touchdown pass from Gage Pearson to Cade Johnston with 8:49 left in the game, and the CHS defense held off a couple of late Mart charges to win 27-20. Crawford’s dominance in the trenches and depth will again prove to be too much for De Leon."

"Sam Waller will be in Glen Rose on Friday night to watch De Leon, having a standout season, see what it can do this time against Crawford in a Class 2A Division I regional title game.
The Bearcats lost back-to-back game in late September, including 45-7 to Crawford in district play, but that was without standout quarterback/defensive back Kevin Yeager. Crawford entered the playoffs the No. 9 team in Class 2A, and the Pirates have been unbeatable since losing their opener to Tolar.

De Leon defeated Riesel 48-21, def. Valley View 37-18, def. Windthorst 30-14.

Key matchup: Crawford’s defensive scheme-vs-De Leon QB Kevin Yeager

Breakdown: Don’t put too much stake in Crawford’s 45-7 win over De Leon on Sept. 23 in both teams’ District 7 opener. Crawford definitely isn’t, and for good reason.
Crawford’s win came with De Leon’s best player, sophomore quarterback/defensive back Kevin Yeager, sidelined. Yeager is the son of De Leon coach David Yeager, who has led the team to the state quarterfinals for the first time in 26 years.

Crawford made it to the state semifinals last season before losing to Canadian.
“Their starting quarterback was injured the last time we played, and he makes a tremendous difference,” Crawford coach Delbert Kelm said. “He’s just a talented quarterback, a talented player. He doesn’t make mistakes and he runs the team … he’s the one who drives everything.”

On Crawford’s defense, there is little doubt who drives things – senior linebacker Lucas Steinkamp. Steinkamp racked up 21 tackles – 16 solo – in last week’s 27-20 win over Mart and has been the harbinger for wins on the Pirates’ defense the last two seasons.
“He’s going to go out there and make plays, and he’s a tackling machine,” Kelm said. “He does a great job and he’s our quarterback on the defense, the one that makes all the adjustments for us on the field. Just a very intense, focused young man.”
