Katy High School Football Playoffs in Jeopardy

KATY, Texas (FOX 26) - The Katy High School Tigers football team could be disqualified from the Texas state football playoffs and the University Interscholastic League will conduct an emergency meeting regarding the matter on Thursday, as reported First on FOX.

The UIL posted an agenda for the meeting Thursday to discuss what at this point would be a possible violation of section 440 eligibility. The agenda says the following: "This emergency hearing is necessary because the outcome may impact upcoming playoff games."

A source tells FOX 26 News that the unspecified player's eligibility status may be in question because he is a "move in." Depending upon why he moved into the area, it could make him ineligible for varsity postseason play. FOX 26 has contacted the Katy Independent School District and head football coach Gary Joseph for clarification of the problem, but no one has responded.

UIL to Determine if Katy Violated Rule with Ineligible Player

The University Interscholastic League’s State Executive Committee will hold an emergency session Thursday to determine if Katy’s football team violated a rule in terms of an athlete’s eligibility.

The 3-person panel of the SEC is meeting Thursday since Katy is scheduled to face Manvel in the Class 6A Division II Region III final Friday night. Katy has won seven state championships and played in the finals in each of the last three years.

Playing an ineligible athlete could result in Katy forfeiting any contest in which he participated in. If it is a playoff game, the Tigers would be eliminated from the postseason.

When a student changes schools, he must wait 15 calendar days from the day he enrolls at his new school in order to maintain his varsity eligibility.

The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the UIL office.

An ineligible player cost Katy a chance to play for a title in 1998, with the team learning 24 hours before they were set to meet Midland Lee in the 5A Division II final.

A player who participated in three plays during the playoffs that season falsified his grades and forged a teacher’s signature. Katy was pulled from the postseason, with the team notified as it was loading the buses for its trip to state.
