James Morton Leaves M. Lee For Eastland

James Morton is coming home to be the head coach and athletic director at Eastland High School.
Morton confirmed with Local 2 News in Midland that he is leaving Midland Lee to take the job at his alma mater on Thursday.
Yes, it is unusual for a coach to leave a 6A program for a 3A program.
Morton was at Lee for seven seasons and led the Rebels to a 38-35 record with trips to the playoffs in 2009 and 2013.
The Rebels were just 1-2 in the postseason under Morton's leadership.
He takes over the program in Eastland for Cliff Watkins, who left for Glen Rose after two playoff seasons leading the program.
The Mavericks are headed in the right direction.
Eastland is a playoff regular with eight straight trips to the postseason, and they have 10 or more victories in the last five seasons.
Morton played for the Mavericks and helped them to a state championship in 1982 in his senior year.
This is his fourth head coaching job in his career. He turned around the programs in Friona and Lubbock Monterey prior to taking over at Midland Lee in 2009.
The Eastland School Board is scheduled to meet on Friday to make the hire official.
