ABILENE, Texas - McMurry University's men's basketball team was unable to cool off a hot-shooting University of Mary Hardin-Baylor team, falling by a score of 86-70 at Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks slipped to 3-17 on the year, while the Crusaders improved to 7-12.
UMHB took control early on, leading by as much as 34 points (54-20) in the opening period, before settling on a 54-22 halftime cushion. In the opening 20-minute segment, the Cru shot a blistering 75 percent from the field (18-24) - including 8-of-9 from three-point range - and connected on 10-of-13 free throw attempts.
The War Hawks made a run at UMHB in the second half, but it proved to too large of a mountain to overcome, especially playing minus second-leading scorer LaRandall Scroggins and with the Cru holding McM's top scorer - Nate Estrada - scoreless until 13:02 left in the game.
However, Estrada would get hot late and help engineer his team's late charge with 11 second-half points. McM wiped away half of the Cru's cushion, but got no closer.
Estrada also shared game high assist honors with six "helps."
Senior Blake Cochran matched his McMurry career high with 18 points on a 6-of-12 day from the field. Cochran was also 4-of-5 from the free throw line off the bench.
Aaron Gettys tallied nine points and pulled down five rebounds. Romelo Robinson booked eight points, while Calvin McGee , Chris Cerny and Gabriel Chacon scored six points, apiece.
McGee passed off for five assists and made four steals, to go along with four rebounds. Robinson had four assists to his credit, as well.
For the game, the Crusaders shot 60.5 percent (26-43) and were 50 percent (9-18) from beyond the arc. UMHB also had 21 more free throw attempts than did the War Hawks.
McMurry will next be in action next Thursday (Feb. 4) versus Howard Payne University, with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at Kimbrell Arena.
