ABILENE, Texas - The Howard Payne University women's basketball team was led by Danyel Bradley's 18 points in a 78-68 victory over McMurry University Thursday evening at Kimbrel Arena.
Howard Payne outrebounded McMurry 46-37 and forced 15 War Hawk turnovers that led to 21 points the turnovers. Jackets led War Hawks 21-11 for the game.
McMurry jumped out to an early 11-2 lead and held a 16-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter. With the score 21-19 McMurry with 6:42 left in the second quarter, the Lady Jackets stepped up the defense pressure and outscored McMurry 20-6 the rest of the quarter.
A Kristin Cunningham steal and layup at the halftime buzzer gave HPU a 39-27 advantage. HPU shot 48% from the field in the opening half while holding McMurry to 36% shooting.
McMurry rallied to within one, 43-42 in the third but HPU buckled down and led 56-49 going into the fourth. The Lady Jackets extended their lead to as much as 15 in the fourth. A Jessica Leaks three-pointer with 6:01 remaining in the game made it 69-54.
Danyel Bradley the Lady Jackets with 18 points, three assist and three steals. Ashley Caldwell had another huge game defensively with 11 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks. Off the bench, Presley McKethan had 12 points and six assists. Jessica Leaks also added 10 points and Kristin Cunninghan had six assists off the bench.
McMurry was led by Taylor Russell with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Haley Welch had 16 points and Sham Hunter followed with 14 points.
Howard Payne is now 13-8 overall and McMurry stands at 4-16 overall. The Lady Jackets will play at Hardin-Simmons on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
