ABILENE, Texas - McMurry University men's basketball's furious second-half rally versus American Southwest Conference West Division leader Sul Ross State University fell short in a 72-64 loss at Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks (3-19) trailed the Lobos (14-8) by as much as 22 points early in the second half before getting to within two points down the stretch.
SRSU carried an 11-point cushion into then halftime locker room before upping its advantage to 53-31 with 13:52 left to play in the contest. The War Hawks whittled away at the Lobos lead from that point. A jumper by LaRandall Scroggins with 2:28 remaining put McM hot on Sul Ross State's heels, 64-62. But that was as close as McMurry was able to get, as SRSU hits its free throws down the stretch when the War Hawks were forced to foul.
Scroggins would tally 13 of his game-leading 20 points in the second half alone. For the night, Scroggins was 7 of-17 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the free throw stripe. He also had three rebounds in his 29 minutes of court time.
Junior guard Nate Estrada was close behind Scroggins with 18 points form the War Hawks. Estrada was 6-of-9 from the floor - 3-of-6 from three-point range - while also snagging six boards. Estrada dished off three assists and two steals.
Freshman Calvin McGee also corralled six rebounds and had three assists. McGee chipped in seven points, as well. Gabriel Chacon had a team-leading four assists and scored five points.
Once again, the McM team did a good job of taking care of the ball, committing just nine turnovers, while forcing the Lobos into 16 miscues. The War Hawks held a 22-8 advantage in points off of turnovers.
