Eagles Win District; Lady Eagles Close Season

The Abilene High Eagles are the outright district champions for the first time since 1990 after Tuesday's win over Odessa High. The Eagles were able to claim the outright title thanks to San Angelo Central beating Permian. The Lady Eagles won their season finale over Odessa High, 77-27.

Starting first with the boys game, the Eagles were leading by four in the fourth quarter, and added to it when Austin Johnson got his turnaround jumper to fall. That put the Eagles up 52-46.

Later in the quarter, the Bronchos were keeping it tight with the Eagles. Ivan Aguilar nailed his mid-range jumper to once again make it a 6 point game.

But the Eagles were too much in this game. In the final minute, Peyton Killam went down court to Diamond Gary, who finished it off at the rim to give Abilene High a 12 point lead.

Abilene High would go on to win the game 66-52. It's their 23rd straight win, and they're the outright district champions for the first time since 1990.

Austin Johnson said, "Woah since 1990, that's a long time. To hear that we brought home district, I mean right when we heard that in the locker room, everybody jumped out of their seats and started celebrating. So, to win district, that's just a good feeling. It makes us want to push forward."

Coach Don Heseman said, "Something that hasn't been done since I was 8. 1990. That's just, I'm speechless. I don't even know what to say, and it's all these young men in this locker room that are celebrating right now."

In the girls game, the Lady Eagles got off to a quick start. Elyssia Esquivel got the rock on the wing and laced in a three to put Abilene High up by three.

Later in the first, Esquivel passed it over to Dakkia Morris, and Morris was able to get her shot to fall. That put Abilene High up by seven.

Abilene High would go on to win the game 77-27.
