ABILENE - Coming off a road win and six days off, the ACU Wildcats return to action Monday night with a "home game" against Sam Houston State in Southland Conference men's basketball action.
With ACU's annual Sing Song presentation taking over Moody Coliseum this week, ACU's game against the Bearkats has been moved to the Mabee Complex at Hardin-Simmons University with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The game can be heard on acusports.com with The Voice of the Wildcats Grant Boone calling the action. Admission for this game is free to everyone.
The Wildcats enter the game at 11-13 overall and 6-5 in Southland Conference play, while the Bearkats are 13-12 and 8-4. An ACU win would push the Wildcats to 7-5 and into fifth place in the Southland Conference standings with six games to play, one-half game ahead of the Bearkats, who would fall to 8-5.
ACU has already eclipsed last season's win total (10) and its six conference wins this season are as many as the Wildcats won in their first two seasons back in the Southland Conference (six). And last Monday's 71-67 road win over Lamar gave ACU its second conference road victory of the season, one more than the Wildcats had won in their first two years in the league.
The Wildcats continue to be led by freshman guard Jaylen Franklin, who is averaging 15.9 points per game, while shooting 50.4 percent from the floor (141 of 280). Franklin had 18 points last Monday against Lamar, the seventh time in 11 conference contests that he has scored at least 18 points.
In ACU's loss to Sam Houston State on Jan. 25, Franklin scored just two points on 1 of 3 shooting from the floor before he fouled out after just 14 minutes of game time. That game marked his fewest field goals in a game this season, fewest minutes and fewest points and second time he had fouled out (at TCU on Dec. 20).
Senior guard Parker Wentz is averaging 9.4 ppg and is ninth in NCAA Division I basketball in 3-point field goal percentage (46.7), a number that leads the Southland Conference. Senior center Duran Porter is third on the team in scoring at 8.9 ppg and second in rebounding at 4.2 rpg, while freshman forward Jaren Lewis leads the team in rebounds at 5.5 rpg and is fourth in scoring at 8.8 rpg.
