GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team fell behind early and could not recover in a 13-6 loss to Chapman University on Sunday afternoon at Air Hogs Stadium in the final day of the Rusty Greer/Jackie Moore Classic in Grand Prairie.
HSU opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning. Colson Craddick had a sacrifice fly and Brandon Walker a bases loaded walk to drive in the runs.
Chapman answered with three runs in the first inning and added six more in the second for a 9-2 lead. Andrew Love had the big blow a grand slam in the second. The Panthers added an unearned run in the third.
HSU narrowed the gap to 10-4 on a Taylor Cooling two-run home run in the fourth inning. Chapman added a three-run two-out double by Gavin Blodgett in the fifth inning to make it 13-4. HSU scored its final two runs on a two-run triple by Kyle Johnson.
Anthony Beasley had four hits for the Cowboys and Cooling and Zack de Luna had two hits each. Blodgett had three hits and drove in four runs for Chapman and Greg Dillon scored four times and had two hits.
Matt Molnar started and allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings for Chapman for the win. Christian Cosby, Dominic Bastone and Kynan Barton each threw an inning in relief.
Jamie Ball started and took the loss allowing seven earned runs in an inning and a third. Ty Englehardt, Matt Rhodes, Garrett Reed, Colt Ritzel and Blake Northrop all worked in relief. Reed, Ritzel and Northrop all had scoreless innings.
HSU is now 2-1 on the year and will play a three-game set at Texas Lutheran next weekend. Chapman improved to 2-4 on the year.
