LISLE, Ill. - Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team saw its first trip to the NCAA Tournament come to an end with an 85-64 loss to No. 2 Benedictine on Saturday evening at the Rice center in Lisle, Ill.
The Eagles came out strong and dominated on the glass outrebounding the Cowboys 34-17 in the first half. HSU shot just 9-of-38 in the first half and 1-of-12 from 3-point range.
The Cowboys took an early 4-3 lead, but Benedictine took over with an 18-4 run to take a 21-8 lead. The Cowboys closed it to 27-17, before BU finished the half on an 11-4 run to take a 38-21 halftime lead.
HSU cut the deficit to 59-48 on a Duane Hopper 3-pointer with 10:11 to play, but the Eagles responded with an 11-2 run to make it 70-50.
Cameron Barnes, the Cowboys lone senior, had 18 points to lead the way for HSU. Dashun Dixon also had 14 points.
The Cowboys lost the battle of the board 51-33 and BU had a 20-8 advantage in second-chance points and a 44-24 advantage in points in the paint.
Michael Blaszcyak had 29 points to pace the Eagles. Lucas Johnson added 20 points and 12 rebounds.
The Cowboys close the season with a record of 19-11. Benedictine improved to 28-0 and will face Ohio Wesleyan in the next round.
