The Cooper Cougars are back on the diamond, and this year, they are being led by new head coach Cody Salyers.
Salyers takes over a club that advanced to the Class 5A playoffs but lost in the early going.
Salyers, a former Abilene High and ACU baseball star, is familiar with the history over Cooper baseball, and he and the Cougars say the transition from former head coach David Cedillo to the new coach has been smooth.
Salyers said, "You know I've been really pleased with how we've started. I'm excited about everything we have going. I've been a head coach for seven years before this, and it's just a different group of kids. Kids are kids, and it's still baseball. So, I'm just excited to be in Abilene and a Cooper Cougar."
Will Murray said, "It was different at first. Instead of just coming in and doing the normal field, hit, leave, run stuff like that. Coming in and actually working on fundamentals and stuff has helped improve our game in all aspects."
Coach Salyers and the Cougars start the Abilene Tournament on Thursday.
The District 4-5A season starts on March 19 at home against Lubbock Cooper.
