Over the weekend three big country teams were in action around town for the Abilene Baseball Tournament, and the Cooper Cougars were one of those teams.
First year head coach Cody Salyers lost two starting pitchers last season in David Ruitt and Jonathan Nicholson, but he is happy with the replacement staff.
"I was excited whenever I found out about the kids we had coming back. I was like, man it seems like just a place that has tons of pitching, and I was like that's a good place to start and something good to build on, so our pitching has handled everything that's come at them so far this year, and I'm excited about what we have on the mound," Salyers said.
"Yeah that's always nice to have, just that sense of knowing that you always have somebody on the mound who's going to go out there and put in seven good innings of work when you need it," Cooper player Will Murray said.
Two key guys on the mound for the Cougars this season will be Austin Smith and Caleb Freeman.
Cooper will take on Lubbock Cooper on Tuesday.
