ALPINE, Texas - For McMurry University's baseball team, it was an unpleasant beginning to a three-game series at Sul Ross State University, suffering a 25-10 loss at Kokernot Field. The War Hawks saw their record dip to 8-9, while the Lobos improved to 10-9.
McM starter John Eric Cortez (1-4) had a rough outing, giving up nine runs (eight earned) and 10 of SRSU's eventual 30 hits in the game. Cortez was chased after 2.1 innings, but it proved to be a game where all four McMurry hurlers met a similar fate versus the Lobos hot bats. Rody Johnson - who relieved Cortez - was tagged for five earned runs, followed by Garrett Scudder (eight runs; seven earned) and Trent Walcott (three earned runs).
SRSU tallied four in the bottom of the first and added two more in the second. The War Hawks rallied for four runs of their own in the top of the third and looked to have climbed back into the contest at 6-4. But in the bottom of the third, the Lobos posted an eight-spot on the board to effectively end McM's comeback hopes. SRSU had another big frame in the fifth, with seven runs.
For its part, McM's Nos. 3-5 hitters - Tyler Jenkins, Danny Perkins and Ty Kirk - carried the bulk of the War Hawks offensive load in the game. The trio combined for seven hits and eight runs batted in. Jenkins was 2-for-4, with a double, home run and three RBI. He also scored twice.
Perkins was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Kirk went 2-for-5 with three RBI.
For the War Hawks - which banged out 15 hit of their own - also having multi-hit games were leadoff man Kevin Garza (2-4, 2 runs), outfielder Nicholas Moore (2-3) and catcher Blaine McRay (2-4, 2 runs). Patrick Adams (1-5) also drove in a run for McM.
The 25 runs was the most given up by a McMurry team since the 2010 season. That year, McM lost to Lubbock Christian, 25-4.
The War Hawks and Lobos will play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m., to close out the series.
