ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a 4-3 American Southwest Conference win over East Texas Baptist before dropping the nightcap 10-4 on Saturday afternoon at Hunter Field.
Game 1
Caleb Jacques put the Cowboys on the board in the second with an RBI triple and Jamie Balladded an RBI double and another run scored on an error. ETBU scored a single run in the third on a Dynas Doud RBI single to center and tied the game in the fifth on a RBI double by Doud and an RBU single by Conner Combs.
HSU went ahead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Zack de Luna had an RBI single down the right field line to drive home Jacques.
Ashley Dukes was solid in his first action of the season for the Tigers. He allowed just one earned run on eight hits in five innings. Chad Boudreaux allowed the run in the sixth to take the loss and fall to 1-2 on the year.
Colton Spears started and went four and one-third innings for HSU. He allowed three runs (two earned) before giving way to Garrett Reed. Reed struck got out of the inning and worked a scoreless sixth to earn the win in relief and improve to 1-0. Taylor Cooling worked the seventh for his sixth save.
Elijah Perez, de Luna and Ball had two hits each for the Cowboys. Doud had three of the seven ETBU hits.
HSU won the series two games to one and improved 12-7 on the year and to 6-3 in conference play. East Texas Baptist is 13-8 overall and 4-5 in league play.
Game 2
ETBU took an early 4-0 lead in the third when they had six hits to go along with two HSU errors. Doud had an RBI single, Zach Compton a two-run home run and Josh Warbington an RBI single.
HSU responded with two runs in the third on a RBI groundout by de Luna and another run scored on an error. ETBU came right back with three runs in the fourth Warbington had a two-run single and Combs an RBI single.
The Cowboys scored twice in the fourth on a Jacques RBI single and wild pitch. ETBU added a RBI single by Doud in the fifth to make it 8-4 and added two more runs in the eighth.
Ty Englehardt started and took the loss for HSU. He allowed eight hits and four runs in two-plus innings. Kyle Barnett, Erick Potts, Mike Richardson and Kyle Johnson all worked in relief.
Cody Pierce (2-2) earned the win with five and two-third innings of four-run ball. Chad Boudreaux allowed just two hits over the final three and one-third innings for his second save.
Doud and Rader each had four hits to pace the 20-hit ETBU attack. Cody Parker, Jake Todd and Jacques had two hits each for HSU. De Luna added a single to extend his hitting streak to 21 games.
The Cowboys will host McMurry next weekend starting on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in an American Southwest Conference series.
