ABILENE -- Friday night, league-leading Southeastern Louisiana showed off its pitching staff as Kyle Cedotal and Kade Granier held ACU scoreless over the final eight innings of a 4-3 come-from-behind Lions' victory.
But on a blustery Saturday afternoon at Crutcher Scott Field, it was the Lions' power and hitting prowess that were on display as the Lions hit three home runs in the game and score ninde late runs in a 10-2 win over the Wildcats in Southland Conference baseball action.
The Lions -- who lead the Southland Conference with a 13-6 overall mark and 5-0 league record -- pounded out 13 hits off four Wildcat pitchers, four of them for extra bases. The Wildcats are now 9-9 overall and 2-3 in league play and have lost five of their last six games in one of the toughest stretches of their season. The final game of the three-game set is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch at Crutcher Scott Field.
The two teams were settled into a 1-1 tie through the fifth after ACU got a run in the third on an RBI single by Aaron Draper and Southeastern tied it in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Daniel Midyett.
Up until the top of the sixth, both starting pitchers -- Mac Sceroler for Southeastern and Garrett deMeyere for ACU -- had done a good jbo of controlling the pace of the game as well as the opposition.Throguh five innings, Southeastern had just four hits and one run to ACU's three hits and one run.
But the floodgates opened in the sixth and the Wildcats were powerless to close them.
With one out, Jacob Seward singled, went to third on a Brennan Breaud single and scored on a Jameson Fisher sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. Midyett then followed with an RBI base hit to make it 3-1 before Webb Bobo launched a 1-1 pitch from deMeyere over the wall in right field for a two-run home run and a 5-1 lead. That was all for deMeyere, who was replaced on the mound by Drew Hanson.
After getting out of the sixth, Hanson got into immediate trouble in the seventh when he gave up a leadoff home run to right field by Carson Crites to make it 6-1 before Chris Eades singled and went to second on a wild pitch. After getting a pair of outs, it looked as if Hanson might be able to work his way out of the inning and at least keep the deficit a manageable five runs through the middle innings.
But Breaud effectively put an end to the game when he pushed a ball off the end of his bat over the wall in right field for a two-run home run and an 8-1 Southeastern lead. The Lions would tack on two more runs in the eighth and ACU would score in the bottom of the inning for the final outcome.
Draper had three of ACU's 10 hits, and he and Alex Copeland each drove in one run. Sceroler picked up the win to improve to 2-2, while deMeyere was tagged with the loss, falling to 2-2 on the season.
