Late DCC Rally Stifles War Hawks, 6-5

Contributed by: Dave Beyer, McMurry Sports Information Director
ABILENE, Texas - McMurry University's baseball team came back from a two-run deficit in the middle innings, only to give up the go-ahead runs in the ninth to Dallas Christian College, 6-5, at Walt Driggers Field. The non-conference loss dropped the War Hawks to 9-11 overall.

It was also the first time that McM has lost to DCC in the five meetings between the schools in its baseball history.

McMurry broke out of the gate first in its first at-bat. A two-out, bases loaded single by shortstop Noah Clarkson drove home Ty Kirk and Chris Baker, giving the War Hawks the 2-0 cushion in the opening inning.

McM starter Tyler Jenkins cruised through the first two innings before the Crusaders got to him in the third for a pair of runs to knot the game, 2-2. DCC would post two more runs in the fifth off of Jenkins in his final inning of work, taking the lead, 4-2.

In his 5.0 innings, Jenkins allowed six hits and the four earned runs. He struck out five and walked just one, but also hit two batters. Mike Hoffman, Aaron Donald and Rickey Lopez held the Crusaders scoreless for the next three innings.

Meanwhile, in the fifth, the War Hawks scored an unearned run to cut the deficit to 4-3.

McM looked to be back in the driver's seat in the sixth. With one down, Tyler Ward singled up the middle. That brought up freshman outfielder Robert White. White deposited a 2-1 offering from Zach Moreno over the left field fence for his first collegiate home run and put his team back on top, 5-4.

Heading into the ninth, McMurry called on closer Juan Valadez (2-2) to finish matters. DCC pinch hitter Michael Maher went all the way to second on an error. That was followed by a single and subsequent throwing error from the outfield that plated the tying run and put the go-ahead run in scoring position. A double by the Crusaders' Kale McQuillen brought home what would be the deciding run, 6-5.

In the ninth, leadoff man Kevin Garza made his way to second base on a fielding and throwing error by DCC's second baseman. However, the next three War Hawks went down in order to seal the McM's loss.

Garza went 2-for-5 in the game. Ward was 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored. White and Clarkson each had a pair of RBI.
