ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team saw its bats go silent in a doubleheader loss to Belhaven on Friday at a chilly Hunter Field, falling 7-1 and 12-0, in American Southwest Conference action.
The Cowboys managed just one hit in each game to drop the doubleheader.
In the first game, Caleb Jacques hit a sinking liner to left field the Jacob Byrd dove for and came up empty and it went to the wall for a triple in the third inning. Zach de Luna drove him in with a fielder's choice.
The Blazers pounded out 12 hits, 11 of which were singles and scored two runs in the first, one in the second, two more in the third and singles in the fourth and sixth innings.
Colton Spears (4-3) took the loss allowing five earned runs in four plus innings. Kyle Barnett worked the final three innings allowing just a run on two hits. Zach Osha allowed just one run on one hit and struck out three for the complete-game win to improve to 1-2.
Trey Eschberger had four hits and drove in three and Will Mullen also drove in three runs for Belhaven.
In the second game, Belhaven scored a single run in the fourth then added two in the fifth, one in the sixth and four each in the seventh and eighth with a parade of mostly singles as 13 of the 16 hits were singles. Ada, Lowalczyk and Jacob Byrd each had four hits and Gabe Veith had three and drove in three runs.
HSU's lone hit came from Colton Pea**** in the eighth inning on a double down the left field line.
Jeremy Hallmark allowed six runs on 10 hits in six innings and Mike Richardson, Sam Hallen, Matt Rhodes and Cody Doucet each worked out of the bullpen. Tanner Moulder earned the win as he allowed just one hit in eight innings of word. He did walk seven and hit four batters. Richard Richardson worked a scoreless ninth with three strikeouts.
HSU is now 15-10 overall and 9-5 in conference play. Belhaven improved to 16-9 overall and 6-5 in ASC play. HSU will try to salvage the final game of the series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
