    Cowboys Split Doubleheader With Mary Hardin-Baylor

    BELTON, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader with Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday afternoon at a soggy Red Murff Field in Belton, winning 8-5 in the first game and falling 7-6 in the nightcap.



    In the first game, the Cowboys jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held on for an 8-5 win with Taylor Cooling getting the final out for his school-record 11th save of the year.



    Zack de Luna put the Cowboys on the board with an RBI single in the third inning and Anthony Beasley had an RBI single in the fourth. In the fifth, Jamie Ball drove in a run with an RBI single and another run scored on a Will Stafford error on the play in right. Colson Craddick added a three-run home run.



    UMHB got a Scott Stephens solo home run in the sixth and scored four time in the sixth when Cody Stone homered after the third rain delay totaling almost two and a half hours against Colton Spears. The Cru chased Spears with a three-run home run by Stephens.



    Colton Parker had an RBI single in the sixth for the Cowboys. Beasley had three hits for the Cowboys to lead a balanced HSU attack. Stephens had two hits and drove in four for UMHB.



    Colton Spears started and went five and one-third innings allowing four earned runs to improve to 5-3. Mike Richardson worked an inning and one-third and Cooling the final out. Connor Heussner went four innings and allowed six runs to take the loss and fall to 2-4.



    In the second game, UMHB won the game on a walkoff wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth. Max Conway doubled to left and it looked like the game was over but the ball went out of an open gate to hold the runners at second and third. Stephens then scored on a wild pitch on the next pitch for the win.



    HSU scored twice in the first on RBI singles by Parker and Ball. UMHB tied the game in the fourth on RBI singles by Stone and Stephens. UMHB took its first lead of the series in the fifth on a Dakota Parsons two-run home run.



    HSU tied the game in the sixth with a Parker RBI groundout and a Cody Berryman RBI single. UMHB scored a run in the sixth and HSU received a de Luna RBI single in the seventh and UMHB added another run on a wild pitch.



    The Cowboys loaded the bases with no outs in the eights and UMHB closer Cory Farr came on and walked Caleb Jacques to tie the game at six, but Farr got out of the jam with a pop up and a pair of strike outs.



    Colt Ritzel started for the Cowboys and Kyle Johnson, Richardson, Blake Northrop and Cooling worked in relief. Northrop took the loss as he left with the go-ahead run on base in the ninth. Casey Frazier started and worked six and two-thirds for UMHB. Farr earned the win in relief with two scoreless innings.



    Parker had three hits and Berryman, Cooling de Luna and Ball added two hits each for HSU. Parsons and Stone had three hits for UMHB.



    HSU is now 18-12 overall and 12-6 in league play. UMHB is now 11-20 and 6-12 in conference play. HSU plays Sul Ross State on Tuesday in Midland.
