ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' women's track and field team made school history by claiming its first American Southwest Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon at McMurry.

The Cowgirls scored 258 points and outpaced second-place Texas-Tyler 258-182. Sul Ross State was third with 101, East Texas Baptist was fourth with 40, Concordia had 28 and Ozarks scored five points.

Evlyn Collins was the high point scorer in the meet along with Samantha Pennese. It is the third straight year Collins has been the high point scorer.

Retiring HSU head coach Rodney Smith was named the ASC Coach of the Year.

"It was a great meet for our girls," said Smith. "We don't have a lot of numbers but we had so many versatile athletes that scored points in a lot of events and that was the difference. They have worked hard for this meet and it paid off."

Pennese, Allie Crossland, Alyssa Western, Collins, Paige Goen, Rachel Davis, Myra Carrion, Molli Howard and Sydney Tencate all earned all-conference accolades.

Pennese won the 100 with a time of 12.81 and Kennedy Connor was fifth and Evlyn Collins sixth. Pennese picked up silver in the 200 and Connor was fourth. Carrion placed third in the 400 and Tencate scored a point with a sixth-place finish.

Tencate added a second-place finish in the 800, the 1,500 and the 3,000 steeplechase. Emily Olguin was third in the 5,000 and 10,000.

Crossland won the 100 hurdles with a 16.29 and Howard was second, Goen fourth and Collins sixth. Howard was second in the 400 hurdles and Goen finished third.

The 4x100 team was second and the 4x400 team finished third.

The Cowgirls had a strong effort on the track, but HSU put the meet away with the field events.

Goen was second in the high jump and Pennese finished fourth. Alyssa Western set a school record to win the pole vault with a 10-11 ¾. Carrion was second. Penesse was second in the long jump, Crossland finished third and Rhea Harris fifth. Harris was second in the triple jump and Penesse finished third.

HSU racked up the points from its throwers. Evlyn Collins won the shot put with a 40-10 ½ and also won the javelin to give her six career individual ASC titles. She was third in the hammer and second in the discus.

Rachel Davis was second in the hammer throw, third in the discus, fourth in the shot put. Carrion was fourth in the javelin and Goen was fifth. Rhea Harris was sixth in the shot put.
