ABILENE - Construction crews began work on the site of the new on-campus football stadium at ACU on Monday as they began clearing the land and digging the hole where the facility will host Wildcat football games beginning in September 2017.
Crews were scheduled to have started last Monday, but last week's deluge of rain forced work crews to wait one week before really getting started. Late last week crews demolished the restroom / concession stand / storage facility that sat at the southwest corner of the old Elmer Grady Stadium track.
ACU director of athletics Lee De Leon said seeing work beginning on the stadium site is something he's waited for sine he arrived on campus in December 2014.
"This is an historic day for ACU athletics," De Leon said. "It's very real now, but will seem even more real once we see the structure starting to come together. We are going to build a stadium our current players, lettermen, fans, alumni and future student-athletes will be very proud to call home."
The Wildcats are scheduled to open the stadium on Sept. 16, 2017, when they host Houston Baptist in a Southland Conference contest.
