ABILENE - The 21st-ranked Baylor Bears exploded for nine runs in the sixth inning Wednesday night to break open a close, competitive game en route to a 15-3 win over ACU in non-conference softball action at a packed Wells Field on the ACU campus.
The announced crowd of 908 set an ACU softball attendance record, and for five innings they saw an entertaining game between one of the top teams in the nation and one of the best teams in the Southland Conference. The teams traded home runs in the first inning before Baylor took a 6-2 lead on a three-run home run in the top of the fifth.
ACU (21-20) answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth on a double by Miranda Herron to drive in Peyton Hedrick to draw the Wildcats to within 6-3.
The Wildcats, however, self-destructed in the top of the sixth inning, committing three errors in an frame that saw three different pitchers combine to give up seven hits and nine runs, although none of the runs were earned. Baylor leadoff hitter Jessie Scroggins had the only multi-RBI hit in the inning as she drove in two runs with a single to centerfield.
Hannah Null got the start in the circle for the Wildcats and took the loss to fall to 12-11 on the season. Hedrick had a two-run home run in the first inning - her 10th home run of the season - to give ACU a 2-1 lead. Cara Hoover was 2 for 3 for the Wildcats, the only ACU player to record a multi-hit game.
The Wildcats return to Southland Conference action this weekend with a three-game series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The series gets started with a 1 p.m. Friday doubleheader and will conclude with a 12 p.m. single game Saturday.
