Neese homers in ACU's 5-3 win at Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Sophomore Holly Neese drilled a fifth-inning home run that proved to be the difference in Abilene Christian softball's 5-3 win Saturday at Texas A&M-Corpus.

The Wildcats (23-21) have now won six of eight Southland Conference series in improving to 16-8 vs. the league. The Islanders, meanwhile, fell to 16-29 and remain in last place at 5-18.

ACU collected just six hits off the Islanders' Stephanie Flores but made the most of each. The Wildcats ripped four singles in the second, including a RBI hit from Taylor Brown that snapped a scoreless tie followed by a two-run knock up the middle by Peyton Hedrick, who finished the series 5-of-12 (.417) with four RBI.

The scored remained 3-0 in the Wildcats' favor until the fifth when Neese cranked her seventh home run of the spring with two outs. Brown scored on the hit as part of a 2-for-2 afternoon with a run and RBI.

Redshirt sophomore Hannah Null went the distance for ACU and survived a tough sixth inning of work, where the Islanders scored three runs on three hits and an error. A Jessica Mendez RBI single to center broke Null's bid for the shutout and follow-up doubles by Aspen Auger and Mariah Clay placed the Islanders within striking distance entering the final frame.

Null quickly retired the first two batters she faced in the seventh, and after issuing a walk to leadoff batter Cosette Hernandez, she got Dani Teft to end the game on a ground ball to second base.

Null totaled only 77 pitches in tossing her 13th complete game of the spring, and of the three runs scored against her only one was earned, dropping her season ERA to 3.02.

The Wildcats complete their regular-season at home next weekend vs. Houston Baptist. Game times are Friday at 5 p.m. (DH) and Saturday at 11 a.m.
