Pitching Leading the Way for Cougars

The Cooper Cougars are moving on to the area round after their series win against Dumas.

One of the big reasons for their success in that series was their starting pitching.

Both Caleb Freeman and Austin Smith pitched complete games for the Cougs.

Freeman had 11 strikeouts in his win, and Smith threw a shutout and tallied 13K's in his win on Saturday.

Having that kind of firepower on the mound will be huge for the Cougars moving forward.

"You know Caleb and Austin, both of them, they did exactly what we've been looking for," head coach Cody Salyers said. "They both did awesome. We couldn't have asked for anything any better. We had a couple of other guys I would have liked to see because we've got a couple of others that can throw just as well, but it's a good problem to have, having that many guys that can go out there and get the job done."

"I mean knowing that you can have somebody that can go out there and compete like that, you just feel relaxed and you're confident with your players as well as people backing you up and at the plate, so we're fine," Austin Smith said.

The Cougs will take on El Paso Jefferson stating Friday in the area round.

The playoff series will take place at Odessa High.
