ABILENE - New Orleans took advantage of some uncharacteristic control problems by ACU starting pitcher Kyle Carroll to score five first-inning runs, and those proved to be the difference as the Privateers beat the Wildcats, 6-4, Sunday afternoon in Southland Conference baseball action.
Carroll - who had walked only 12 batters in 60 2/3 innings of work entering Sunday's game - walked the first two men he faced and four total in the first inning and three of those four scored as the Privateers jumped out to a big early lead. The Wildcats chipped away, but again couldn't come up with a big hit when needed as they dropped another close contest in a season full of them.
The Wildcats are now 14-30 overall and 6-18 in the Southland Conference, while the Privateers improve to 28-18 and 12-12. ACU has one home game left this season and that comes Tuesday night when the Wildcats host nationally ranked Texas Tech at 6:30 p.m. at Crutcher Scott Field.
From there the Wildcats are on the road for the final nine games of the season: at Incarnate Word next weekend, at Dallas Baptist (May 17), at Northwestern State in the final Southland series of the season (May 19-21) and at Arizona (May 24-25) to close the season.
Carroll walked Aaron Palmer and Samuel Capielano to start the first inning before recording an out. He then walked Hezekiah Randolph to load the bases before giving up a two-run single to Kyle Bracey to make it 2-0. After a strikeout of Chaz Boyer, Carroll gave up an RBI single to Preston Marsh and a two-run triple to Ryan Calloway to cap the scoring in the first inning.
ACU got two runs back in the bottom half of the first on an RBI double from Heath Beasley and an RBI groundout from Braxton Wilks. The Wildcats would add another run in the fifth on an RBI single from Beasley, who was 8 for 12 with four RBI in the series.
The Privateers tacked on a run in the eighth and then thwarted a couple of solid ACU scoring chances in the late innings.
In the eighth, ACU scored a run to make it 6-4 and loaded the bases with two outs, but UNO closer Danieal Martinez got Hunter Markwardt to ground out to third to end the inning. Beasley doubled to lead off the ninth, but Martinez retired the next three batters to end the game, earning his 11th save of the season.
