    Bulldog Defense Key for Pitchers

The high school baseball regional quarterfinals wrapped up Saturday, and several Big country teams are moving on to the semifinals including the Wylie Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs swept their series with Midlothian Heritage winning 12-1 and 5-1.

One of the reasons for the success they're having is their stellar pitching staff.

The Bulldogs say that having pitchers who get strikeouts is key, but the defense behind them is just as important.

"I think it's just, it's a matter of the defense behind us," Bulldog pitcher Mac Mueller said. "We can get a lot of ground balls. Lane calls a really good game. He throws runners out. The outfield does a really good job covering area out there, so the fly balls that do get out there, they get caught. The defense playing behind us makes it a lot easier. We don't have to get strikeouts every single at bat, we can just get some ground balls, get quick outs and get out of there."

"I think they do a good job of keeping the ball in the strike zone," head coach Clay Martin said. "We've done a good job of not walking a lot of batters, and when you do that you give your defense a chance to play, and the ability that both of them have to strike guys out when you need it is a big plus too."

Wylie continues their playoff run starting Thursday night against Snyder at 7.
