Albany leads a group of twelve Big Country schools picked to go to the Class 2A playoffs by Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine.
Head coach Mitch Ables and the Hawley Bearcats are coming off the school's best season ever, and they are hoping to do even better in the 2016 season. Junior quarterback Quay Stokes is back to lead the Bearcats, again, this year. Stokes is a seasoned veteran with two seasons under his belt, and last season he threw for over two-thousand yards and he had a hand in 39 touchdowns.
Even with thirteen starters returning, the Bearcats are picked to finish behind Class 2A newcomer Post for the district title. Stamford and Anson are expected to go to the playoffs. Forsan is picked fifth.
Goldthwaite and DeLeon are picked to go to the postseason in 2016 out of District 7-2A Division I. Goldthwaite is second behind Crawford. Hico is third and DeLeon is fourth.
The Albany Lions are coming off back-to-back runs to the state championship game, and Texas Football says they could make another one in 2016. Denney Faith's Lions are picked to win District 6-2A Division II, and they are ranked third in the state to start the year. Look for the defense to be the strongest unit early on with eight returning starters on that side of the ball.
Albany, Baird, Cross Plains, and Bronte are picked to go to the playoffs. Miles and Winters are expected to miss out on the postseason.
District 4-2A Division II will be a fight, and the Roscoe Plowboys expect to be in the thick of things. Quarterback Brayden Beal is back after leading the Plowboys to their third round of the playoffs in 2015. Beal threw for over three-thousand yards and 40 touchdowns. You can expect another good year for head coach Jake Freeman and his team.
They are picked behind district newcomer Seagraves for the district championship. Hamlin is third and Tahoka is fourth. Plains and Roby round out the picks for the district.
The Haskell Indians and Munday Moguls are expected to make the playoffs out of District 7-2A Division II. The Indians are picked second behind Electra, and Munday is fourth behind Quanah.
The Ranger Bulldogs are a part of District 8-2A Div. II for the next two years. They are picked sixth. Muenster, Lindsay, Santo, and Perrin-Whitt are the probable playoff teams.
