AHS And CHS Picked By Texas Football To Claim District Crowns

For just the second time in recent history, the Abilene High Eagles are not in a district to the west. The UIL moved them east for the next years to be a part of a district that includes the four Keller schools, Weathord, and Haltom.
Not to surprisingly, the Eagles and second year head coach Del Van Cox are the favorites to walk away with the district championship. They return a total of eleven starters for the 2016 season.
Running back Abram Smith is one of the top returners this year. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2015 and led the team in touchdowns.
Quarterback Peyton Killam returns, as well. The Eagles have to rebuild some on defense, but Coy McMillan and Isaac Buenrrostro are there to provide leadership.

Eagles running back Abram Smith said, "We are working 7-on-7 to build a little chemistry going with the guys, and stuff. The whole thing is just to get better. We've got to fill some holes in. Some of the seniors left, and now we just got to fill them in with the younger guys. We got a group of kids that are going to be able to do it."

The Eagles are picked ahead of Keller Fossil Ridge, Keller Central, and Keller High. Keller Timber Creek, Weatherford, and Haltom are picked fifth, sixth, and seventh.

Like Abilene High, the Cooper Cougars are in a new look district that includes four schools from the same district, and also like the Eagles, the Cougars are picked to be district champions in 2016.
Head coach Todd Moebes and his team are joined with Lubbock Cooper and San Angelo Lake View, like the last two years, but Lubbock High, Lubbock Monterey, and Lubbock Coronado join the fun this year.
Cooper is loaded with returning starters. Seven are back on offense and eight return on defense. Offensively, the Cougars are led by quarterback Austin Smith, who threw 20 touchdown passes in 2015.
Running backs Devin Johnson and Tyrees Whitfield are back after combining for 1,900 yards and 24 rushing touchdowns last year.
Terreon Paige and Zach Goodson anchor a really good defense that helped Cooper advance to the third round of the playoffs.

Cooper quarterback Austin Smith said, "I'm hoping to go a lot farther than we went last year, and just to do what we didn't do last year and came short of and get to the goals that we've always been talking about and wanting to do. So, I just hope we get them this year."

The Cougars are picked to win the district. 2016 champion Lubbock Cooper is next according to Texas Football. Lubbock Monterey and Lubbock Coronado are expected to be the final two playoff teams. San Angelo Lake View and Lubbock High are expected to be on the outside, looking in.
