9 Big Country Schools Picked For 3A Playoffs

Texas Football magazine says nine Big Country schools will advance to to the Class 3A playoffs in 2016.
Starting with Class 3A Division II, the Cisco Loboes have been the most consistent winner among Class 3A schools in the Big Country over the last decade, and Texas Football says that will continue in 2016. Head coach Brent West has nine positions filled with returning starters from last year's district champions. Kase Gayle got some invaluable experience at quarterback for the Loboes last year, so he's set to take over under center in 2016.

The Coleman Bluecats are next in the district, but don't be surprised if they surprise the Loboes and claim the district title. A whooping seventeen positions are filled with starters this year from a third round qualifier from last year. Bryson Hammonds was called on at quarterback after the first game, and did well with almost 27-hundred total yards and 41 touchdowns for the Bluecats. Coleman will be a tough out this year.

Eastland and new head coach James Morton are picked third this year followed by Tolar, Dublin, and Bangs in the district.

The Colorado City Wolves are expected to return to the playoffs with a third place finish in District 2-3A Division II. Idalou and Lubbock Roosevelt are one and two. Stanton is expected to be fourth and Coahoma is out of the playoff picture.

Ballinger is picked third in District 3-3A in Division II. Sonora, Reagan County, and Alpine are the other playoff teams.

The Clyde Bulldogs are picked to lead a trio of Big Country schools into the playoffs in Class 3A Division I this year. Rocky Smart is working to build a program in Calahan County and, this year's expectations may be a sign he's done it. Just 8 positions are filled with returners from last year's playoff team, but the expectations are still high. Quarterback Tanner Riley is a key returner for the Bulldogs. He threw for almost 33-hundred yards and 39 touchdowns in 2016.

Brady is picked to win the district. Clyde is second. Comanche and Jim Ned finish off the playoff teams. Merkel and Early are fifth and sixth.

The Breckenridge Buckaroos are also expected to return to the playoffs this year. The Bucks are loaded with thirteen returning starters from 2015's area finalist team. Seniors dominate the defensive lineup, and Texas Football magazine says that side of the ball will be key to the Bucks success.

Defending state champion Brock is picked to win the district. Bowie and Boyd come in after Breckenridge. Ponder and Paradise are picked to miss the playoffs.

Three Big Country schools are ranked in the Texas Football Preseason Top 20. Breckenridge is the only one in the Division I poll at number twenty. District rivals Cisco and Coleman are in the Division II Top 20. The Loboes are seventh. The Bluecats enter 2016 ranked eighteeth.
