Texas Football Magazine talks about the college football season for ACU, McMurry, Hardin-Simmons and Howard Payne
The ACU Wildcats are coming off of a 3-8 2015 season and this year still looks a little shaky. Head Coach Ken Collums knows that sophomore quarterback Dallas Sealey, who came out of spring practice with the starting job, will lead the offense.
Sealey threw for 824 yards and rushed for 173 last season, but according to Texas Football, his goal this year is to get the ball to junior running back De-Andre Brown. The Cats are young at receiver, so Brown, who rushed for 801 yards, will most likely carry the load early.
For the rest of the Southland Conference, Sam Houston State, McNeese State and Stephen F. Austin are picked 1, 2 and 3. ACU is down at no.9 in the pre-season picks
At the Division III level, the Hardin Simmons Cowboys look like they could have a great year. The quarterback job is not yet set, but they have two solid options, Weston Gardner and Ryan Breton. Former Abilene High Eagle Reese Childress could have a breakout season. He will play as many as four positions for the Cowboys.
Mary-Hardin Baylor is picked first in the ASC, but HSU is a very close second with Louisiana College and East Texas Baptist at third and fourth.
The McMurry War Hawks have finally graduated all of their scholarship players, and now they have some decisions to make. The Hawks main running back, Dontrell Dock had six rushing touchdowns last season, but the quarterback job still isn't set. Juniors Xavier Alexander and Cy Ward will be competing.
McMurry sits at no.5 in the ASC pre-season picks with Sul Ross State, Belhaven and Howard Payne at the bottom.
The Yellow Jackets have a new head coach in Hunter Sims, and his job isn't starting out easy. He needs to replace a quarterback and receiver, but they do return five starters on offense. On the defensive side, HPU returns four starters including ASC leading tackler, Jason Disney at linebacker.
