The Cooper Cougars are picked to win their district this season and a big part of that prediction comes from the success of quarterback Austin Smith. In 2015 Smith threw for 2,311 yards with 20 touchdowns.
In 2016, Smith's focus is on leadership and improvement.
Austin Smith said, "I'm going to focus on leading my team, and hopefully just to get where we've never been before. That's something I want to do and help us out to get. Just have a bunch of good sports. None of these kids just hanging their heads and having bad attitudes. Just want positive attitudes and winning championships."
Smith says that from last season to this season he has improved, specifically in one area.
Smith said, "I'd just say my confidence has gone up, my trust has gone up with my teammates. We have a couple of new kids, not really a whole lot of new kids, so I still have a lot of trust with the kids I've already played with, so I have a lot of trust, a lot of confidence going in this year, and I don't know, just a lot of confidence."
Just about every high school football player's goal is to win state, and Smith had a little more to add to that goal.
Smith said, "Well a basic one is to go win state, but other than that, just add on to what I couldn't do last year, and add on more yards, just be with my teammates more and just bond with them better than I did last year."
And Smith says he is ready to go farther.
Smith said, "I'm hoping to go a lot farther than last year really, and just to do what we didn't do last year that we were short of and get to the goals that we've always been talking about and wanted to do, so I hope we just get them this year."
