RICHARDSON, Texas - For the first time since the 2011 season, the McMurry University football team will find itself again eligible for the American Southwest Conference regular season championship entering the 2016 campaign. In the just-released American Southwest Conference pre-season football poll, the War Hawks have been ranked fifth in the ASC pre-season prognostication.
McMurry enters its third season of a four-year transition into NCAA Division III in 2016-17. McM was a charter member of the ASC in 1996. The War Hawks played one season in the NCAA II Lone Star Conference in 2014.
McM's games will now also count toward the ASC conference standings. The War Hawks - playing a partial ASC slate in 2015 - amassed a record of 4-6 (with four of those losses by a combined 11 points).
McM was tabbed ahead of both Sul Ross State University and Howard Payne University in the ASC poll. ASC perennial-power the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor was picked first and Hardin-Simmons second. East Texas Baptist University - a team which McMurry defeated last year - was tabbed third and Louisiana College fourth.
McMurry opens its 2016 slate of games on September 10 with a non-conference bout at Southwestern University in Georgetown Texas. The War Hawks ASC opener will come on October 1 at top-ranked UMHB.
