AYSA Hosts Volleyball Showcase at Cooper

The AYSA High School Volleyball Showcase is in it's second day of round robin play.

Saturday the teams were divided into brackets: gold, red, white and blue, to finish up the competition.

This is the seventh year for the tournament and it continues to grow.

The showcase started out with six teams and this year has grown to 18 teams with 4 or 5 new this year, and AYSA Executive Director Jon Smith hopes to see it grow even more.

He says the showcase not only benefits the athletes, but also the Abilene community and it's economy.

"So a lot of these small towns, they don't play in the big showcase events, so we kind of made this an unofficial showcase, and so I'll send out emails to about 40 or 50 colleges just all around saying, hey you can come see some really good talent here in West Texas," Smith said. "It's a great thing for Abilene, and again, we give them Abilene hospitality. We run the event, it stays on schedule, and so it's proven that really good events here in Abilene will draw a lot of teams Too, we lack facilities, so hopefully within the next year or two we'll have the funding raised for our sports center that we can really conduct very large showcases and other tournaments year round here in Abilene."

Smith also said that once they have the necessary funding for the building of the sports center they hope to host more tournaments which will bring more people into Abilene.
