    AYSA Tournaments Benefit Community

The city of Abilene hosted a volleyball showcase this weekend for teams from across the Big Country and the state.

According the Abilene Youth Sports Authority, this year's tournament featured 18 teams, which makes it the biggest they've ever had, and over 175 hotel room nights were used.

AYSA Executive Director Jon Smith says the event could be even bigger with the new sports center the AYSA is trying to build.

"It's tremendous for Abilene, we're just currently limited. We just don't have the gym space to do it more often," Smith said. "Like I said, we've got probably 800 people in town staying in our hotels, eating at our restaurants, visiting our stores, and so with the sports center that we're working to build, we'll be able to have events like this. Grow this event to, you know, 30-40 teams and have 20 to 50 tournaments, basketball, volleyball, and other sports every year, year round. That would just be a huge huge blessing for Abilene and our economy."

Wylie walked away with this year's trophy.

It's the first time a Big Country team won the showcase since 2012.
