    Wylie Gets Back to Work

The Wylie Bulldogs and head coach Hugh Sandifer are one of the programs that is known through out the state because of their success, and the Bulldogs are coming into the 2016 season off an appearance in the Class 4A Division I semifinals last year.

It's a new year, and coach Sandifer is looking forward to seeing what his new team can get done.

"You know the football season for us goes from January to December, so we're in August. So now we're kind of getting to the things that are really fun and the things that we really want to do," Sandifer said.

The Bulldogs coaching staff is one of the most experienced in the Big Country and maybe even in the state. Most of the coaches have been around for more than decade, and several have been with coach Sandifer for over 20 years.

This staff has seen just about all there is to see and that is one of the reasons Wylie continues to win games and appear in the playoffs.

"The key to that is we're not content. We like the new season just as much as the kids do. It's a new opportunity for us to reinvest in what we're doing. There's a lot of things we don't have to meet about," Sandifer said. "They pretty much know how I want practice run, and the team knows how the coaches want practice run, so it's a lot of time we can cut out of meeting time, that we can get ready to come out here and practice."

This year, coach Sandifer returns eight starters. Five of those are back from a very good defense that allowed eight or fewer points in ten games in 2016. It's a good foundation, and the Bulldogs hope to build another championship team on that foundation this year.

"We should be way ahead of the offense, and we should be way ahead of the game on that defensive side of the ball. We're excited there. Our philosophy obviously starting today is there are no returning starters. You got to earn that spot again, and I think our kids understand that," Sandifer said. "They've been around long enough to know they're going to have to lead the way, but they're also going to have to earn that spot."

Here are some BCH Sports quick hits about the Bulldogs.

All-state defensive lineman Dion Novil is back to anchor the Bulldogs' defense this year. Zach Smith is moving from defensive back to quarterback for the 2016 season.

Wylie opens the new year at Vernon on August 26th.
