Former district rivals Abilene High and Midland Lee met at Shotwell Stadium Friday night, and it all went in favor of the Eagles.
The Eagles had a much better taste in their mouth after the game as opposed to week one's loss to San Angelo Central, and head coach Del Van Cox was very happy with the way his guys responded in week two.
"It's definitely a better feeling than this time last week , but I'm so proud of our kids and our coaches," Cox said. "It's been a long week for our coaches and our players, and they knew that we were better than what we played. Life is all about how you respond to things, and we did a great job of responding to our getting punched in the mouth last week."
The Eagles offense got right to it against Lee. On the opening drive, Peyton Killam connected with Qua'Shawn Washington who goes into the end zone giving AHS a 7-0 lead.
On the very next possession, the Eagles found the endzone again. This time Killam went deep to Xavier Alexander, and he outran everyone into the end zone. That was 78-yard touchdown, and the Eagles led 14-0.
Then in the second quarter, on 3rd and 24, they give it to Abram Smith of course. Smith went 30 yards for the touchdown as the Eagles led 20-7.
Later on in the game Smith had another scoring play. This one comes after a drive that was 8 plays for 35 yards and finished with a Smith touchdown.
"I think our offensive guys thought that they didn't stop us but one time when they had to punt. We thought we left a couple of touchdown drives on the table in the first half and then gave them one," Cox said. "We thought we could have easily been 42-7. We just had to keep pressing and keep executing and making sure that they were doing the things that they were supposed to do."
Cox was happy with the win, as the Eagles are now 1-1, and look to be in good shape coming out of week two. Next up is the crosstown showdown next week.
