GEORGETOWN, Texas - Reese Childress scored three times and the Hardin-Simmons defense allowed just 222 yards and three points as the Cowboys beat Southwestern 26-3 on Saturday night at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.
After a scoreless first quarter, Southwestern took a 3-0 lead on a Luke Fierst 37-yard field goal with 12:29 to play in the first half. It was the only points of the night for the Pirates.
HSU took the lead with :17 to play in the first half when Childress leaped over two defenders for a touchdown from Ryan Breton.
The Cowboy defense continued to be stout in the second half and with 1:39 to play in the third Breton hit Childress in the right flat and Childress juked a defender and went 41 yards for a score to make it 14-3.
Childress sealed the win with a 46-yard reception from Breton where he split two defenders and raced to the end zone with 2:48 to play. Garrett Martin blocked a punt for a safety with 1:22 to setup the final score.
The defense allowed just 3.1 yards per play and allowed only 222 yards on the night. HSU had 355 yards of offense.
Josh White led the defense with 10 total tackles and Cory Ward added nine.
Breton completed 16-of-37 passes for 207 yards and three scores for HSU. Jaquan Hemphill had 49 rushing yards and Childress had five catches for 119 yards and three scores.
Bryan Hicks had 151 yards passing for the Pirates and Aaron Robinson led the way with 12 tackles.
The Cowboys are off next week and will play at Southwest Assemblies of God on Sept. 17 in Waxahachie.
