    Cooper Beats Monterey 24-17

The Cooper Cougars faced Lubbock Monterey in their first district game on Friday night, and they finished it in big fashion.

The Cougars came out hot, with Austin Smith finding Juwan Hong for a long run that set up Devin Johnson to score the first TD of the game.

Monterey is known for thier explosive offense, and tonight's game was no different, as they scored twice in the second quarter and came close to taking Cooper's lead in the first half. But in the end the Plainsmen offense couldn't shake the Cougars defense.

Head coach Todd Moebes said, "I thought they played really well, we know how explosive Monterey is and we knew we had a challenge in front of us. Certainly very very proud of their efforts."

The Cougars got a little sloppy coming out of the half, Austin Smith fumbled the ball, but the Cooper defense held Monterey to only a field goal out of that possession which brought the score to 17 all, where it would stay until the very end.

Cooper's Terreon Paige intercepted Lubbock Monterey in the 4th, putting the Cougars in position for Smith to hit Isaac Hatter in traffic in the end zone for the final touchdown of the game. Cooper comes out on top, 24-17 over formerly undefeated Monterey.
