ABILENE, Texas - McMurry University's football team could not hold off a potent East Texas Baptist University squad, falling by a 67-31 score in an American Southwest Conference contest at Wilford Moore Stadium. The War Hawks (1-2, 0-2 ASC) dropped their Homecoming game to the Tigers (5-0, 2-0 ASC), the No. 17-ranked team in NCAA III.
McM lead 7-0 and 14-6 early in the second quarter. However, ETBU would reel off six touchdowns, interrupted only by a 37-yard Tanner Wright field goal as the first half came to a close. Wright's boot for the War Hawks cut the deficit to 26-17 at the intermission.
The Tigers extended their advantage in the second half, posting 21 and 20 points, respectively, in the third and fourth quarters.
The two teams combined for 1,122 yards of offense. ETBU amassed 706 yards, 492 via passing. The War Hawks had 416 yards, 240 of which came on the ground.
Freshman quarterback B.J. Ross ran for 77 yards and three for 174 more, completing 12-of-25 passes. Ross ran for one touchdown and threw for two more. He did not throw an interception, but was sacked five times.
Junior running back Kalieb Granger - celebrating his 21st birthday - ran for 54 yards on four carries. Among Granger's runs was a 38-yard TD jaunt with 4:50 left in the game. Fellow back Kelvaughn Hayes also gained 54 yards on the ground, carrying 11 times, and Wade Barthelemy Jr. added 42 yards on four attempts.
Ross' favorite targets proved to be Stone Harris and Eriel Dorsey. Each had three catches, with Harris amassing 57 yards and Dorsey 45. Harris had a 46-yard TD strike from Ross early in the fourth quarter. Hayes had McM's other receiving score on a 40-yard hook-up with Ross for the first score of the game at the 11:45 juncture of the first.
Defensive back Decorian Johnson had 11 total tackles and also blocked an extra point kick. Johnson also had two punt returns for 13 yards and two kickoff returns for 40 yards. Fellow defensive back J.R. Arroyo had 10 tackles, seven solo. Arroyo also forced a fumble and had a pair of pass break-ups.
Ryan McBeth added eight tackles and had two interceptions, totaling 94 return yards.
The War Hawks will hit the road next week, traveling to Belhaven University. Kickoff in Jackson, Miss., is slated for 1 p.m.
