ABILENE, Texas - Abilene Christian University director of athletics Lee De León announced Tuesday in his monthly email newsletter that ACU will be undertaking two new facilities projects that will be ready for use by fall 2018.
ACU has secured the funds for a $1.6 million tennis facility that will be named for head coach Hutton Jones' father, ACU letterman John T.L. Jones Jr ('57). The two-story facility will be built on the east side of the three main courts (directly opposite of the pavilion), in the grass area between the courts and ACU Drive.
"ACU has enjoyed one of the finest tennis facilities in the Southwest for the last 15 years," De León said, "but we've been missing a building our men's and women's teams can call home since we added the outdoor pavilion, the Cecil and Judi Eager Tennis Center."
The first floor of the building will consist of public restrooms, a small gameday training room, locker rooms for each team and assistant coaches' offices. The second floor will house a team room, player's lounge and head coach's office, as well as a covered balcony on the west and south sides of the building where coaches and staff can watch matches on each of the 10 courts.
"I've always believed that a facility to house our team would give us a tremendous advantage in recruiting and other areas over those schools that we compete against," Hutton Jones said. "This building will mean so much because we'll finally have a team room where we can watch video, hold team meetings and other events and not have to worry about trying to find rooms across campus to do those things. This will change the entire dynamic of our team."
The other project is an exterior renovation to the Teague Special Events Center, which has been the administrative home of ACU Athletics since 1997. To better serve the administrative staff, coaches, student-athletes and visitors, ACU is undertaking a $1.25 million renovation to the Teague Center.
The exterior and parts of the interior will be renovated this fall to make it more closely resemble the exterior of the new Wildcat Stadium. A new and larger lobby area inside a new front entrance will celebrate the history of ACU programs and the legacy they have created at the university.
"Both of these facilities will enhance our existing facilities, which are already among the best in the Southland Conference," De León said. "I hope in the next few months we can announce more facilities growth as we work to compete and win at the highest level of NCAA Division I athletics."
