    Jones Named Academic All-American POY

AUSTIN, Texas - Being named to the CoSIDA academic all-district team is a big achievement and Hardin-Simmons had four of those, being named to the first-team All-American team is even more of an honor and Kami Jones and Kirsten Parrish accomplished that, but Jones topped even that honor as she has made school history by being named the CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year for Division III Women's Soccer.

Jones, a junior from Comfort, has a 4.0 GPA as a biochemistry and molecular biology double major. She has also led the Cowgirls on the field to a 20-1-1 record and a spot in the NCAA Round of 16 this weekend. She won her second straight American Southwest Conference offensive player of the year award and has 23 goals and 16 assists on the season.

"Kami Jones is special in every way," said HSU head coach Marcus Wood. "She is very deserving of this recognition. She is an exceptional student and athlete. The best part is she is an even better person. She has every character skill that makes a person a joy to be around. Her teammates will celebrate with her because she is a great teammate. We are all proud of Kami."

Parrish was also a deserving contender for the top overall award. She was named to the All-America team for the second straight season. She has a 4.0 GPA as a biology major. She was the defensive player of the year in the ASC and spearheads a defense that has allowed just three goals this season.

"KP could just as easily have won the top award," said Wood. "Quality people that are committed well-rounded student-athletes are the reason for our success as a team."

The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program is the most prestigious academic recognition program in the country. It is the signature program of the organization and takes a lot of work by many dedicated communications professionals to recognize an outstanding combination of academic and athletic credentials.

The program is trademarked and it is the only organization that can call their recipients Academic All-Americans. It is voted on at the district level by the sports information directors in the district. The All-American team is voted on by a panel of the top SIDs in the country and combing through all of the great potential athletes is a difficult and time consuming process.

Student-athletes are nominated by their respective sports information director, using a combination of athletic, academic and leadership qualities. Every voter has their own criteria for picking the team. Some use more athletic credentials with good grades, some go strictly by GPA. To come out at the top of the ballot as the Academic Athlete of the Year is a distinguishing honor.

HSU has had 43 All-American selections and 15 first-team selections all coming since 1998. This is the first time for HSU to have the Academic All-America of the Year® for any sport.
