David And Del Van Discuss AHS vs. Desoto

The Cooper Cougars and the Abilene High Eagles are back in the 3rd round of the playoffs. Cooper topped previously unbeaten Canutillo to advance, and Abilene High dominated El Paso Americas to punch their ticket.

Head coach Del Van Cox's team were in control of the area championship game from the start.

They gained 475 yards of offense and found the end zone six times.

Defensively, the Eagles gave up a total of 88 yards and just 8 first downs and scored a touchdown on an interception. It was a great night to be an Eagle.

Here's David's conversation with Coach Cox.

David Robinett said, "Coach Cox, you made it to the third round. This is a big deal getting to practice on Thanksgiving. How pleased are you with the way your guys played in the second round against Americas?

Del Van Cox said, "One of our goals every year is to be playing football on Thanksgiving weekend. It's a big deal because there are 16 teams left, and anyone of those 16 can win the state championship. There's no slouches left, and this is where you get into the good teams. I was really happy with our perfomance the other night. Our kids did a great job of preparing and holding that running back. Our defense was phenomenal. It was just a fun night."

Robinett said, "Now you've got DeSoto. This is a game that I think a lot of people saw coming. You had to take care of some business to get it here, but now it's here. Are you looking forward to seeing how your guys perform against a team that is thought of so highly?"

Coach Cox said, "Yeah! Everybody thinks they are the best team in the state. It's a great opportunity for us to show how good we are and how far we've come as a team. Our guys are playing with lots of confidence. They're ready to get into that area and see how good we really are."

That's the deal. The 3rd ranked Desoto Eagles are next up for Abilene High.

Desoto is undefeated, the Eagles are 2 and 1 against them in the playoffs. They play at 6 in Wichita Falls on Friday.
