ABILENE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' baseball team lost a slugfest, 16-11, against Millikin in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Hunter Field.
The game lasted 3:20 and featured 13 walks and four hit batsmen and 29 combined hits between the two teams.
HSU got off to a good start in the first inning when Dylan Sweeny had a two-run home run and Garrett Buckner had an RBI single. Millikin scored twice in the second on an RBI fielder's choice and a wild pitch.
HSU made it 7-2 in the third inning on a three-run double by Buckner and a Taylor Cooling RBI single.
Millikin had back-to-back six run innings that was the difference in the game to take a 14-7 lead. HSU scored two rimes in the fifth on a two-run Sweeney single and Buckner added a two-run single in the sixth. Millikin added a Mason Bruce home run in the seventh and a Gutierrez RBI single in the ninth.
Colt Ritzel started for the Cowboys and Hayden Day, Chandler Carter, Brock Bourland, Kyle Johnson, Blake Northrop, Mike Richardson and Taylor Cooling all worked in relief. Day took the loss.
Jacob Hennessy started for Millikin and Gage Eller won the game with two innings of work. Phillip Ganley, Zak Owens and Ben Peters all worked in relief. Millikin shut the Cowboys out the final four innings on just on hit.
Cooling, Todd and Buckner had three hits each for the Cowboys. Buckner drove in six runs and Sweeney drove in four.
Juan Gutierrez drove in six runs and had three hits for the Big Blue.
HSU is now 7-10 on the year and Millikin improved to 7-3. HSU will host Howard Payne this weekend in ASC action.
