Red Raiders Win Pitcher's Duel Against ACU

ABILENE - Abilene Christian outhit Texas Tech, 5-4, but three errors and seven runners left on base helped the Red Raiders escape Poly Wells Field with a 2-1 victory Tuesday night, giving them a 2-0 lead in their season series. Texas Tech defeated ACU, 3-0, earlier this season at Texas State and the two sides will meet again Wednesday, April 5 in Lubbock.

Tonight's win lifted Texas Tech's record to 12-9 while the Wildcats fell to 10-12 with their Southland Conference opening series vs. Southeastern Louisiana coming up this Friday and Saturday.

Texas Tech got on board in the first with a two-out Jessica Hartwell solo home run off Hannah Null but was held scoreless through the next three innings as Null retired 10 of the next 11 batters she faced with three strikeouts. Sidney Holman came on to start the fifth and retired the side in order, but got into some trouble in the sixth where the Red Raiders went up 2-0.

Tech's half of the sixth inning started with an unfortunate catcher's interference call. Pinch runner Camaury Washington then went to second on a ground ball, advanced to third base on a fielding error by shortstop Peyton Hedrick, and scored on Raina O' Neal's chopper down the third-base line. Holman got out of the jam, however, with a foul out and ground out with two runners in scoring position.

ACU cut the Red Raiders' lead in half three batters into the sixth. Hedrick was hit by a Cheyene Powell pitch to begin the frame and took off to third on Brianna Barnhill's gapper to left field. Tech went to the bullpen once more with freshman Kassidy Scott, and after allowing an RBI ground out to Holly Neese she retired five of the next six batters she faced in earning her second save of the spring.

Taylor Brown singled to left-center field with two outs in the seventh, but Scott got the game to end on a ground ball to second as Kenzie Davis fielded a short hopper at her toe tops and made a good throw to first and get Braegan Hamilton by half a step.

Mattison Maisel started for the Red Raiders and scattered three hits over 4.0 innings with two walks and two strikeouts.

This weekend's game times vs. the Lady Lions are Friday at 5 p.m. (DH) and Saturday at noon.
