ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team swept a three-game series from old American Southwest Conference rival Texas Lutheran with 4-3 and 14-12 wins on Friday at Hunter Field.
Game 1
The Cowboys used the long ball to its advantage to rally for a 4-3 win in the opening game.
TLU scored three times in the second inning. Tyler Cauley hit a two-run home run and Thomas Varner had an RBI single. It was the only runs the Cowboys allowed in the game.
Cody Berryman led off the second inning with a solo home run for HSU and Dylan Sweeney hit his ninth home run off the year when he hit a shot off the foul pole in right in the fourth inning. In the sixth inning Sweeney drew a two-out walk and freshman Tyler Bradshaw hit his first career home run a two-run shot to center field to give HSU a 4-3 lead.
Garrett Johnston worked six and one-third innings. He allowed just three runs on seven hits to improve to 4-2 on the year. Blake Northrop recorded the final two outs for his first save of the year.
Dylan Drgac allowed four runs on eight hits and fell to 6-2 on the year.
Anthony Beasley had two hits for the Cowboys. Varner and Cauley had two hits for TLU.
Game 2
TLU jumped to a 7-0 lead with seven runs in the second inning. The Bulldogs had seven hits in the inning and six different players had RBIs in the inning.
HSU came back with three runs in the second, two on a Berryman double and a Jace Langen RBI single. The Cowboys added three more in the third inning. Colon Parker had a two-run double and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
The Cowboys busted the game open with an eight-run fourth. Parker had an RBI single, Cade Johnson had a two-run single, Elijah Perez had a bases loaded walk, Langen had a two-run single and Taylor Cooling had a two-run double to give the Cowboys a 14-7 lead.
TLU scored on a Keaton Boysen RBI single in the sixth a Eric Rabinowitz sacrifice fly in the seventh. Rayce Gatlin had a two-run home run in the ninth and Riley Schaefer added an RBI triple.
Cade Killingsworth was the first of six pitchers for TLU. He allowed six runs and Landon Weatherly allowed four runs to take the loss.
Ty Engelhardt started for the Cowboys and allowed five runs. Kyle Barnett allowed three runs over four innings, all in the second inning. He moved to 2-1. Chandler Carter, Mike Richardson, Kyle Johnson and Northrop all worked in relief.
Parker and Langen each had three hits and drove in three runs for HSU. Coly Schrade, Spencer Brandt and Rayce Gatlin all had three hits each for the Bulldogs.
HSU is now 16-17 on the year and TLU fell to 20-15. HSU will travel to Concordia next weekend.
