Big Country Teams Fall in Qualifiers

The Dublin Lions and Springtown Porcupines each punched a ticket to the state 7 on 7 tournament with semifinal victories.

Teams from all over the Big Country and beyond met in Jim Ned for the 7 on 7 state qualifier. And with Wylie having already qualifying for state, it came down to Dublin, Ballinger, Albany and Springtown in the final two games of the day.

Each of the games were tightly contested. Dublin defeated the Ballinger Bearcats 35-29 and Springtown took care of the Albany Lions 33-26. Springtown finished the day perfect at 4-0, and even defeated Wylie in the final game of pool play 26-25.

Ballinger took a 7-0 lead on a Hagen Garvin touchdown pass, but Dublin responded with 13 unanswered to take a 13-7 halftime lead. The Lions would preserve that difference in the second half to clinch a spot in the state tournament.

In the other semifinal matchup, Albany with just nine players hung with Springtown and trailed just 26-19 at halftime. However, the up tempo pace of the Porcupines wore the Lions down and Brian Hamilton couldn't connect with Adam as time expired.

Springtown and Dublin will travel to College Station later this month to compete for the Division 1 7 on 7 title. Albany and Ballinger will each have one more chance to qualify.
