When the tenth-ranked Sweetwater Mustangs and the seventh-ranked Monahans Loboes get together, you can count on one thing, for sure, the district title is going to be on the line.
At least that's the way it's been in recent years, and Texas Football expects it to be that way again this year. Monahans is picked to win it, but you can bet the Mustangs will have something to say about that.
Sweetwater came out on top in three of the last four meetings. That one loss was last year, and the Loboes went on to a perfect regular season.
The Mustangs got the last laugh because they went all the way to the state championship game. 2017 is the tenth year in a row for the two West Texas rivals to get together, and it's a really even rivalry.
Monahans has five wins. Sweetwater has four. The last two meetings were decided by a total of 4 points. You can expect another great game in the next to last week of the year.
The District 3-4A Division I championship could very well be decided in the first week of district play.
The unranked Brownwood Lions travel to take on sixth-ranked Wylie. Wylie is picked to win the district and Brownwood is picked second.
This is a relatively new rivalry with just thirteen meetings. The Bulldogs hold a commanding nine wins to four lead in the series with seven straight wins and nine in the last ten games.
As you can imagine, Brownwood plans to snap that streak this year. Their offense could be better than it was in 2016 because seven starters are back in Kyle Maxfield's second season leading the way.
Wylie is returning seven starters, which is a bunch for this program, and they are coming off a trip to the state championship game. Look for head coach Hugh Sandifer's team to reload in 2017.
Like in most seasons these two are in the same district, the winner should walk away with the district championship.
